The Jamaican Reggae Star, Jimmy Cliff has slammed the act of skin bleaching, insisting those who do it are “ignorant.”
Discussing dancehall star Vybz Kartel, who sparked controversy after endorsing skin bleaching earlier this year, the63-year-old Cliff is against the deejay’s actions.
“Skin bleaching is a level of ignorance,” said Cliff. “When people bleach their skin it’s usually from black to pale, and those people are ignorant of what is beautiful. I think Kartel is an intelligent young man and right now, I think he’s following the path that he wishes to follow. But people who do that for beauty or because they think they’ll have better prestige in society are ignorant. It’s gross ignorance. It goes to the root of the brainwashing that makes people believe that light is good and dark is bad.”
Though Cliff thinks Kartel may rethink his penchant for lightening his skin, he fears that skin bleaching may, one day, become as common as hair relaxing!
