My cousin sent me this story bright and early this morning and I must say I am very appalled and disgusted in the way Shekina Walters of Jamaica was treated when she visited the island.
Barbados, is this how you treat your visitors??????? Total wotlessness!
Read Coretta Joe’s commentary below.

Photo: Lennox Devonish
For an island that prides itself on our high literacy level, Bajans displayed some disappointingly backward behaviour on Wednesday in town when Jamaican tourist Shekina Walters was followed and ridiculed throughout Swan Street. For an island that supposedly embraces people of all colours, class and creed, and by an extension, people of all shapes and sizes, Bajans ought to be ashamed of themselves for how they treated the 21-year-old, who is said to weigh 300 pounds.
I had just left a class when my BBM started going crazy with people broadcasting photos of the young lady being followed by throngs of people who, from the looks of it, were taunting her and snapping photos like crazy. I didn’t think much of it because I had other things on my mind and I didn’t know the full extent of the madness. So imagine my surprise when I got into the office the day after and saw a photo of the very same young lady on the back page of the Daily NATION with the caption Thick Chick Turns Heads. It’s not the fact that the photo made the news that bothered me, but I was and still am disgusted at the insensitivity of Bajans.
Looking at the photo in detail with my trademark disgusted scowl, I realized that almost everyone had cellphones in their hands snapping away. The crowd of bullies included mainly women and I even spotted a security guard. What stood out to me was this woman behind her with her mouth open as if she were laughing and shouting obscenities. She ought to be ashamed that as a woman, she took part in pulling down another woman. In fact, all the people who played a part in the ridiculing of this innocent plus-sized woman should be very embarrassed to see themselves in the newspaper behaving in such a manner.

I’m sure that Ms Walters is not the biggest woman that Bajans have ever seen, so why make a circus attraction of her? Of course, I lay a fraction of the blame on her, because I do not think that her mode of dress was appropriate, especially for a woman her size. However, there are far more pressing issues that deserve ridicule.
I might ruffle a few feathers for saying this, but Caucasian tourists come to our shores and peruse our shops and stores mainly on Broad Street as they please and they are allowed to do so in peace except for the minor nuisances that are homeless men begging for money and taxi men hustling to make a dollar. And I’m sure that some of these women are at or around the same size as Ms Walters. But no, Bajans, docile individuals as some of them are, would see them and show maximum respect but will go to such lengths to ostracize a black woman and fellow Caribbean sister. Word is, stores had to be shut because people just wouldn’t leave her alone. And Captain Sawyer of Big, Fat And Thick fame, don’t think that you have escaped the wrath of my pen. No one cares that you sang about loving the full-figured ladies. If you truly loved them, you would have done something to help Ms Walters yesterday. Instead, you followed her like all the others. Shame on you!

Are we in the Caribbean so ignorant and small-minded that we need to resort to following people, teasing, taunting and jeering them? If the sight of the young lady was amusing, look, laugh amongst yourselves if you wish and look off! It is a public street, not a circus or a zoo.
This incident reminds me of Sara Baartman, one of the Khoikhoi women who was taken from her home, South Africa, in 1810 and was exhibited as a freak show attraction in 19-century Europe. Baartman “performed” under the name Hottentot Venus – now an offensive term. Known for her unusually large posterior and elongated labia, Baartman was publicly ridiculed for years until she died just five years later. Her skeleton and preserved genitals were on display in Paris until 1974.

Shekina Walters is a human being and should be treated as such, and no one should have to go through the ordeal that she went through.
Bullying comes in various forms, and the display that Bajans put on yesterday was one of the worst. Ms Walters was subjected to verbal and emotional bullying, and there is no telling what this experience can do to her psyche.

Everyone, no matter what they look like, should be able to conduct their business wherever they go without the harassment and embarrassment that she was subjected to. I hope that she will take this unfortunate experience as a lesson and I hope that Bajans know that their behaviour is not acceptable.

Don’t matter how big you are…you really shouldn’t behave this way towards another human being. Fell sorry for the girl…she should have gone “Jamaican” on their ass!
September 22, 2011 at 9:16 am
Better yet, she should have went “Bajan” on their ass. That would have been much worse.
October 31, 2011 at 3:54 pm
Let me say something i don’t agree with ridiculing anyone because of their size. THIS WOMAN WAS NOT RIDICULED for her size. I live in the Caribbean and see people much bigger than that on the island. Its her dress that got her all the attention. I mean what the hell. Are you kidding me? She was looking for attention and she got it. In this girls suit case she had nothing appropriate to wear, If she stayed in her room like that, fine. You came out in public and so you are subject to public scrutiny. One more note, i dislike it when foreigners chastise what we island people do, you do this kind of thing every single day and you put it on the media and call it shows. Who the hell are you!! I don’t feel sorry for her one bit, she was responsible for her actions
November 10, 2011 at 9:37 pm
And what is wrong with her outfit? I’ve seen bajans who dress worse than that and who are actually fatter than this girl. This is bull and Bajans need to come better than that trust me! Bajans need to wheel and come again for thinking they better than people! Whack ass accent! UGH!
December 3, 2011 at 12:08 pm
Oh,so u just hate Bajans? because if ur comment were about the way that the people reacted to that walrus and what she was wearing u wouldn’t had criticized them as a people…Jackass!!!!(UGH)
February 26, 2012 at 9:23 pm
yes, we hate those effing people who strip search jamaican women (that I know of) by fingering their genitals for drugs, abusing and manhandling them at their airport. http://jamaica-star.com/thestar/20110324/news/news3.html
F! them and f! anybody defending them!
After that, I have no respect for them as a nation, especially when coupled with this and other things. Things like the only time a crime in their country make headline news is when it’s a jamaican! Crimes of worse severity by their own people never make headlines!
December 3, 2011 at 12:29 pm
you are a big idiot she comes out dressed like that expect scrutiny with her tucky assed legs and body totally sluttish!
December 7, 2011 at 2:13 pm
Wow…her outfit is sluttish? wow…you self righteous human beings are amazing
January 24, 2012 at 4:32 pm
to everyone who is a bajan and reading this ‘fuck of’ if any man who don’t like meat should turn into a vegetarian because i don’t see anything wrong with a beautiful black woman who is secure with her size and not afraid to show it other than those anorexic skinny bitches who want to be like those runway models no wonder they cant keep their man because they are afraid of getting pregnant, also the men who should keep their mouth shut because is they go America is a big white woman they looking to marry just to get citizenship……….full of shit bajans, i know them because I’ve been around them, Hippocrates that’s what they are……….you go girl….looking damn good in your outfit,,,,they just vex because they cant look like you and that skinny woman or man with that bag of weave in her head should not say any thing because i sure her head picky and have more teeth than a shark also looking like courage the cowardly dog, not to talk bout granny shame on you because you are suppose to be an African but where is your ass, like you wanted some of hers…..big up my African empress
March 12, 2012 at 3:08 am
If she is slutty then they should love this woman instead of making fun of this young lady. The woman with the bleached hair has more fat in the tummy than the young girl. all the bajan women need to look in the mirror instead of casting stones at other people. If you are refeering to the Jamaican as slut by the way she dress then you have much to learn from Bajans women.
January 27, 2012 at 9:23 pm
arrrh, bajans accent are one of the nicest and i’m not a bajan. jamaicans own are messed up, you could never understand them under all the gibberish. they are a ppl that have no self respect, so its hard to respect them. and this girl’s outfit is evidence of that.
February 6, 2012 at 5:15 pm
Bajan accents is the worst I ever heard I understand a jamaican more than a bajan..I understand why this woman was follow I mean you can watch and look but keep walking behind her..Bajans have nothing better to do with their life ..a good thing my country is not like that shame on Bajans
March 16, 2012 at 2:46 am
Bajans accents are not cute at all hun so dont no what ur talkin about. And u guys should be ashamed of urselves degrading ur own caribbean ppl choosing which country is best and who accent is better if d girl feels 2 dress like dat den let her. I’v e lived England 2yrs n visted America and France and there are women who dress like dat very often but the difference is ppl dont stare dem dwn like dey jus discovered d cure 4 AIDS and aint sharing it!!!! Get a fuckin life ppl
March 20, 2012 at 10:55 pm
It clear by the behavior of the bajan people …..that they are” never see come see” or what I like to say a primitive society.
Because the young women was wearing a fashion that is in deed in style and of this era.
Also so what if she is overweight its not a crime.
April 1, 2012 at 4:16 pm
Wow What strong statement about ones accent! for your information everyone has an accent whether American, Canadian, Jamaican and Barbadian it depends on what part of the country you are from. I am a Jamaican and I am very proud to be one. I also adore my accent ,for you to talk bad about someones accent is ridiculous and makes you very ignorant. NYC is the mecca of people living together in one big melting pot. Go out and make some friends from different cultures and country and learn to love everyone as you would want to be loved. Imagine a garden with one kind of flowers! How bland that would be. ps I think Bajan nasal accent is the worse than any other country but guess what my best friend is bajan. Have a nice day!
January 31, 2012 at 10:40 pm
wack ass accent??? In a. Bajan “me and your stinking mother”…she looked ridiculous….no bajan woman wouldn’t have put that on….not to go in Bridgetown….stpzzzz
February 18, 2012 at 8:01 am
Lard fada, I know some Bajan,s living in yankie bigger than she and wearing less dan she for labour day, all yu real sick. imagin a whole community follow this girl. .Nah for real all yu need to wheel and come again, I love my sweet T,n,T where every race and size has an equal place. Tell the young lady to visit us in Trinidad she would be welcomed
February 29, 2012 at 3:22 pm
yes jenni….only in sweet t & t…….all is welcome!!!!
March 14, 2012 at 5:38 pm
hahah i agreee leave the girl…alone Bajans suck for their behavior…..with the wack accent….lolol u guys hilarious right now ….cheeze n bread
November 13, 2011 at 8:35 pm
If she were white, Bajans never do that!
December 4, 2011 at 11:32 am
Omg, Five, you are so right! When I glimpsed the article I immediately checked it out because I wanted to know what provoked that large crowd to taunt the young woman, but then I look at her size and the dress code that went with it… it’s ridiculous!!!!!! I’m not applauding the woman who held onto the girl’s arm (total invasion of the girl’s space!) neither am I praising what the crowd did, but the girl looked for that kind of ATTENTION.
December 5, 2011 at 10:47 pm
you are an ass your self for saying such dumb shit. Bajans generally are not welcoming, this is not the first time I have heard stories like this and personally I have experienced it for myself. They need a reality check to go fuck themselves.
December 21, 2011 at 10:44 am
I’m from Grenada, and I’ve travelled the Caribbean several times. I must say, the most unwelcomed treatment that I have ever received was in Barbados. The people were so rude to us I couldn’t believe it. I don’t want to generalize an entire population, but I surely did not receive such negative attitudes in the other islands.
February 1, 2012 at 7:09 am
the thing about bajans is they full of talk, their whole country depends on others they always treating other islands like second class and ask where the money come from to do anything in their country……is some other country or island… they always begging Trinidad and Tobago to help do something… I’m not a bajan hater but i HATE the way they treat the other Caribbean people but they better check themselves……
December 6, 2011 at 8:44 pm
Are you saying that it’s not ok for her to be ridiculed because of size, but that it’s ok to RIDICULE HER ON ANY OTHER GROUNDS?!?! You are ridiculous. NO ONE deserves ANY ridicule. There is a fine line between “being under public scrutiny” and “being made to feel like sh!t”, and no one is deserving of the latter. We all are aware that her dress was inappropriate, but that does not give YOU or any other human being the right to harass/ justify harassment of the woman. I cannot BELIEVE that pic with the MASS OF PEOPLE jeering behind a very embarrassed young woman. How DARE you excuse this behaviour?! I am not Bajan, but I am ASHAMED for Barbados. I am aware that the other day, something similar was posted in the newspaper, just that it was an oversized white tourist. it takes one idiot to jeer and pull out a camera to incite a hundred others.
February 3, 2012 at 11:11 am
Keisha-Anne ~ U took the words right out of my mouth. Very well said. It doenst matter what shape, size, color, she is or what she is wearing, NO HUMAN BEING should be treated this way by any other human being. PERIOD!! This just disgusts me. These are grown people acting like a bunch of grade school children. They should all be ashamed of themselves and grow the f**k up. Absolutely horrible.
December 7, 2011 at 7:12 pm
I do agree that she is responsible for her actions and could have dressed more modestly given her size however the bajans behavior was stupid and immature!!!! If i had seen any of my family members or friends tagging along behind anyone to ridicule then for whatever reason I’d be ashamed!!!!!! Obviously Bajans have no life and this was the most interesting thing for them to do!!!!! SHAME!!!!!!! ALYUH BAJANS S T I N K!!!!!!!!!!!
January 3, 2012 at 9:50 pm
Ur a cunt! You don’t have to like Bajans….whatever de fuck you is! Yes these people were wrong for ridiculing this woman but that doesn’t mean every Bajan is like that…you sir or ma’am need a FUCKING reality check! FUCKING STINK MOUT CUNT!
February 6, 2012 at 5:56 pm
just how i expect Bajans to behave…. Like the Grenadian person, Barbados is the most unwelcome country in the Caribbean I’ve been too…. and I’m Lucian!
February 23, 2012 at 4:22 pm
U r just another examples of the idiots!!!!! Bajans r so ugly both inside and out!!!
February 26, 2012 at 9:32 pm
yes, we hate those effing people who strip search jamaican women (that I know of) by fingering their genitals for drugs, abusing and manhandling them at their airport. http://jamaica-star.com/thestar/20110324/news/news3.html

January 27, 2012 at 9:19 pm
i totally agree, she didnt respect herself by wearing that dress, Jamaicans wear just about anything, but they should keep that in Jamaica. i don’t feel sorry for her, she should not have worn such a dress. at the same time people do what plz them and the whole bajan population should not of made it their business.
April 1, 2012 at 4:24 pm
You guys are something else she can wear what she want and everyone talk bad about Jamaicans yet want to be like us. Just ignorant talking. People all over the world copy our hair style and everything else. We love ourselves and we need not apologise.
February 23, 2012 at 4:16 pm
For those of u who are saying its her dress ,thats just stupid!! have u seen the tourists in ocho Rios and Montegobay walking around in bath suit only ?? women of all sizes colour and shape, do we see Jamaicans ridiculing them in any way? Jamaican need to stop going to Barbados. The have intimidated us enough. Try to remember the cases of cavity search and holding Jamaicans in prisons because they did not think they should come in to their country and there was no immidiate return flights. If I was in her position i would give them a reason to “draw crowed” Wise-up Jamaicans , they are not better than us.
February 27, 2012 at 3:48 pm
I agree with you, her size is not the issue, it’s her lack of DECORUM. The person who wrote the complaint about the Barbadian people, probably has no DECORUM them selves.
March 15, 2012 at 2:10 am
But that does not give these ignorant assholes to treat her like that there is nothing wrong with looking and moving on but following the young lady where ever she went is down right stupid. We all are entitled to wear what ever we so chooses to wear. It appears to me that the citizen of Barbados have no morals or integrity.
March 27, 2012 at 4:36 pm
That is a stupid remark. What the hell does her dres have to do with it? I see people of other colour walk the streets half naked, some as big as her but NO!! because they are of a different colour it’s ok but all you go on like this woman was a spectacle. When I read this article I was amazed..I never knew our own caribbean people would behave in this manner. I am ashamed I tell you…geezzeee..

September 21, 2011 at 2:33 pm
thank God for small wonders
September 22, 2011 at 11:44 pm
What an ignorant statement you just made. Just because u see some mean and ignorant people teasing someone, u think the entire country is evil? Really now? I’m sure there are no ignorant, or mean people in Grenada rite? Everyone in Grenada is innocent, and has a beautiful soul? O plz!!!!! It’s amazing how people use one bad incident to spew hate on an entire country.
October 18, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Remember this saying be careful who you trample on the way to the top you may need us when you falling back down, Barbadian people head so far their butt they head is full of sh..; I am not being emotional Look how you treat your follow Caribbean people but when the same Caribbean people act the way you guys do only then you want to be judgmental,Please! what ever coming your ways you deserves it. SMH, WHEN YOU YOU PEOPLE HUMBLE YOUR SELF….!!!!!
I AM NOT SURPRISE OF YOUR DEPLORABLE ACTION…YOU ARE Barbadians/Barbarians
December 6, 2011 at 9:42 am
You said a few people taunting this girl …..well barbados is not that big and i think i saw your whole population there taunting this girl. you bajans should feel shame and not try to condone your bad behavior. You have to recognize the problem before you can fix it. But as much as they say they are educated….it does not show. Its like educating a drunk…..he might know what to do but the alcohol clouds his brain…..stupidity clouds bajans brains….And they are one of the ugliest people in the caribbean with the worst accent too.
January 3, 2012 at 9:51 pm
Ur a cunt! You don’t have to like Bajans….whatever de fuck you is! Yes these people were wrong for ridiculing this woman but that doesn’t mean every Bajan is like that…you sir or ma’am need a FUCKING reality check! FUCKING STINK MOUT CUNT! Nobody needs you to come to Barbados stick to your so-called “spice island” of grenada….we do NOT need you in Barbados.
March 15, 2012 at 2:21 am
Now what type of behavior is that. Prince of Barbados I understand you do not like the response that was made that Bajan are evil people i am from Trinidad and I to did not not like what I saw I have so much respect for my fellow Caribbean people but when you see that one of our Caribbean Island citizen acting like they don’t have any got dam sense it hurts and to add insult to injury they humiliate one of our own so don’t be mad of the response that was transpired just know that you Prince of Barbados will never stoop to that level.
January 3, 2012 at 10:05 pm
Good that you will never travel to Barbados because we DON’T need you! You think your absence makes us sad?! Not really! You’re ignorant! Stay in your little so-called “spice island” of grenada (which by the way i find interesting and beautiful as I am not half as ignorant as you!)….Stay in your own country and don’t come to ours and then there will be no “problem”
September 20, 2011 at 10:38 pm
Disgusting behavior; if she was in Jamaica she would be embraced for her FLUFF a dis diss bajan dem diss u baby. And the sad part is that on numerous occasions I have read reports of bajans who are appalled by Jamaican ‘bad behavior’ but I’m quite sure that no bajan fluffy or slimmaz for that matter has met this kind of ridicule while in JA, GUYANA , GRENADA, TRINI OR ANY CARIBBEAN ISLAND FOR THAT MATTER.
September 20, 2011 at 11:31 pm
Something like this really makes you believe the Shanique Myrie incident happened, without a doubt!

I never really stop to comment on articles but this particular article has caused me to pause. I can’t believe that my fellow Caribbean people (particularly the women) can find it in themselves to behave so foolishly and be so insensitive towards other people’s feelings. Was that the best reaction that they could have given? Really? It is all so juvenile. I understand that cultures in societies differ and so what may be acceptable in Jamaica is clearly ‘looked down upon’ in Barbados but what really was their point? Did they hope to shame her into adopting their norms? This is incredible! How dare they treat this woman like that? Complete strangers! If I didnt know better I would swear that these adults were back in the classroom! And who the hell is this woman with the blond hair who couldnt seem to keep the taunting at a distance and so had to apparently get up close and personal? Is she CRAZY!!!! Its one thing to call me names but the chemicals from that blond dye MUST be seeping through her pores and causing major brain damage if she thinks she can touch me to emphasize her insulting point.
I understand that the dress code was off, and I in NO way say its okay that she wore that. However, i have seen the same if not worse before. I agree with the author, if you dont like it… comment among yourselves and let the woman go her way. Or better yet “YUH DOH LIKE IT…LOOK AWAY AND MIND YUH OWN BUSINESS!!!” If they were so concerned why didnt soemone display some human qualities and quietly advise the lady not to dress like this. If you’re brave enough to do this, than you should have been brave enough to approach a stranger and advise her on her choice of clothes. Oh yes… Barbados… you have SHAMED YOURSELF! The funny thing is that they’re laughing at this woman and yet the only things I see to laugh at are the idiots who probably throw off their plans/ business/appointments to follow a woman on vacation who has nothing else but time. ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR!!!
What can I say? To the young lady, not many of us can say “As I strut down the streets I make everyone else forget their plans for the day.” Keep your head up and dont allow this to destroy your self esteem and maybe it would be a little more appropriate to wear something a little longer (its as simple as that Bajans- i didnt need to taunt or chase anyone)
October 3, 2011 at 3:49 pm
i dont think she was taunted because of her size but because of the way she was dressed. cellulose and bags hanging everywhere shame on her. where did she leave the rest of her clothes she should try to retrieve it Women u should respect yourself and stop exposing God’s temple to the world u should earn respect in order to gain respect she wanted to be a spectacle and she was.
October 12, 2011 at 3:17 pm
It’s one thing to be a plus size lady who knows how to dress her body and still kill the game. But it’s another thing to wear something that is totally inappropriate for your body. She should learn how to wear her damn size. She looked disgusting. I am a woman of size as well, and I know how to dress my body type too. When you can see all and every ripple in your legs, that’s asking for somebody to stare at you. I can dig being comfortable in your own skin, but WEAR YOUR DAMN SIZE.
October 28, 2011 at 7:47 am
I totally agree with you, just to add a little more. I am Jamaican and i can tell you that for vacation it doesn’t matter what that girl is wearing and her size in it…..take a drive on Norman Manley blvd in Negril Jamaica or ochi rios and look at the tourists that come here and what they wear and their bodies, sometimes i shake my head, which is what a NORMAL,person should do, not ridicule. The girl payed for her ticket to take her vacation, to spend in these people country and this is the thanks she got wow…generous set of people (NOT).
September 21, 2011 at 12:19 am
What an embarassment that young lady had to endure. If it was a white woman they wouldn’t behave in such ugly manner. I can’t understand, how can we black people always trying to put down our own people? I didn’t believe we have so much ignorant and uneducated people in our society. Now I realized why our society cannot be better.
September 22, 2011 at 10:59 pm
Shouldn’t people not be discriminated regardless of the color of their skin or their weight? Should people get special treatment just because they are a member of one race or another? An overweight woman is being mocked for being overweight and now this has been turned into an issue of race. For being modern people of the 21st century, your brains are stuck in the 19th century.
February 23, 2012 at 4:34 pm
I dont think the bajans would be acting like that towards a group of fat ass white Europeans i doubt it.
September 26, 2011 at 7:09 pm
One thing for sure is that next time she steps out, she will remember to cover up herself more modestly. Their are other plus sized women just like her but they respect their assets and do not go displaying them in public places such as on the streets. Sorry, but she definitely invited this response. She looked in the mirror before she stepped out (I dont have to ask) because that’s how women dress so she got the attention she stepped out for only she never bargained for more. The above article now being published on the internet is now worst than the newspaper article because he has now invited the world to see her…….sorry shame on you too because I would not be commenting now if it wasn’t for this.
September 21, 2011 at 7:46 am
Sad to say Bajans feel they actually better than the rest of the caribbean. don’t know what blow up that bubble. this woman is beautiful by all means, more than sum d “hot” ones in the pic. See vincy aint rich and modern and whatever else you can think of but we are 100% more hospitable and welcoming. I am embarrassed by this as a person from the caribbean an I imagine how terrible this poor woman must feel.
September 21, 2011 at 2:36 pm
she can’t feel bad walking about like that, if you seek attention you will get it
September 22, 2011 at 12:59 am
Do you ever type something and then stop yourself because you realize what a sexist pig you’re going to sound like? Oh, well maybe you should start.
It never occurs to people that women don’t dress for sexual attention. We dress how we want and if people treat us differently for it, that’s their problem.
September 22, 2011 at 8:26 pm
Yes! Couldn’t have stated that better!
February 1, 2012 at 2:22 am
how is that sexist?? i am a woman and i think you are ignorant, women DO dress for sexual attention, you just dont want to admit it… and as for dressing how you want, i guess thats why women are in this ignorant state of mind today
September 21, 2011 at 8:33 am
It is a shame that the insensitivity and stupidity of a few tarnishes the reputation of a whole country.
This behaviour was rediculed on fb, radio etc. I’m so sorry she was subjected to this type of barbaric behaviour. It is also a shame that women were mainly the culprits, and the Nation Newspaper should not have highlighted such. Times like these are when I am not proud to be called a Bajan.
September 21, 2011 at 2:38 pm
what would you like to be called then? American?
September 22, 2011 at 8:27 pm
Yes!
September 23, 2011 at 11:19 am
This behaviour is not an embrace of what the whole of Barbados is like. I simply meant this type of attitude is unacceptable and embarrassing and was an expression of how i felt.
September 21, 2011 at 1:09 pm
Why on earth is she dressed like that in the first place.?????? Maybe she went seeking the attention she got…………….stupes
September 21, 2011 at 11:02 pm
She may dress how she pleases, when she pleases, where she pleases, thank you. You fatphobia is showing and it’s quite ugly. Clothes are not an invite for people to ridicule or bully, rape or assault and neither is their weight. Stop being a close minded, ignorant body policing ass.
September 22, 2011 at 3:22 pm
I really feel sorry for what this young lady had to endure amongst this ignorant crowd. Its even more embarassing that she was mocked by grown adults. Im Canadian, from Jamaican decent and im disgusted. Respect yourself and those around you. These “Island vs Island” debates are so pointless and prove nothing. We have no control over where we are born and/or raised. Grow up.
September 22, 2011 at 1:29 am
Victim blaming? How delightful of you. It’s just like saying women in short skirts “deserve” to be raped. As a bigger woman, I myself would never wear that dress, but that is MY decision. If she wants to dress like that, she has the right too. Who are you or who is anybody else for that matter to judge her by what she wants to wear. It’s attitudes like this that are to blame for the set back in women’s rights….and all the shame it’s coming from another woman.
September 21, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Did the young lady come out and said she was treated badly? Did of any of the photos show a woman in distress?
The general behaviour of Barbadian is to watch from afar and wispher. The young woman knew she gets attention because of her CURVES and the she DRESSES.
There is time and place for everything including dress.
The same s**t happens to celebreties no dont condemn the Barbadian behaviour.
To much attention seekers walking the earth.
September 21, 2011 at 8:13 pm
I totally agree with you. Bajans tend to be a bit prudish and as a previous commenter said, “they will stand from afar and whisper about anybody”; Bajans or tourist alike….anybody. They believe there is a time and place for everything and walking through town midday dressed like a prostitute is neither the time nor place.
Barbados has some very beautiful plus size woman, much like Ms. Walters and produces a very well anticipated Miss Big & Beautiful pageant yearly since 2003 but I can guaranteed you none of them would be dressed like this in such a setting. I am no way justifying the actions of these people following her, because it looks very stupid but anybody who puts on an outfit like this will attract attention!
September 22, 2011 at 1:28 pm
Oh thank goodness, the slut shamers are here to tell us all how to dress!
September 21, 2011 at 2:31 pm
As a Bajan, I must say that the behaviour portrayed by the crowd in those pics has left a lot to be desired but a pic is worth a thousand words. With that said, that young lady should have known better than to enter someone’s country and dress as provocatively as she has (especially in broad daylight) and not expect people to stare and point fingers. Let’s be honest with ourselves, the world is not a kind place for persons who too big or even too small it is not only Barbados and I can guarantee that if she had on a leggings with that dress she would not have been heckled. @jermain Barbadians are not evil and wicked as u have described and many tourists including those from our region would agree with me. Maybe if you came to Barbados and not base your opinions on hearsay your mind might change and if you don’t, who cares? For those who read the article in the Nation newspaper about this , you should have read that she said that she is accustomed to this. Therefore, we may be upset about it but maybe Ms. Walters likes the publicity, who knows? I admire her confidence
September 22, 2011 at 1:34 am
So by your reasoning she has to change herself because “the world is not a kind place”?
She has to change herself because the world can’t handle the way she dresses?
Why do we still have this attitude in 2011? The only way the world changes is if people RECOGNISE the issue and takes steps to change the behaviour. Not if we sit back and just accept it.
So its perfectly acceptable for this woman to be harassed because that is just simply how the world is? I’m sorry, but I find your excuses for the behaviour of the crowd and your victim blaming absolutely disgusting, almost as disgusting as the way this woman was treated. By making excuses and blaming the victim, your condoning this behaviour.
September 21, 2011 at 2:39 pm
finally, somebody with common senses
September 21, 2011 at 4:01 pm
Gross. That’s a huge gal. I think they were making fun of her for flaunting her grossness and thinking it’s cute. She obviously had no respect for herself with that outfit so why should others? I’d be tight if I had to look at that crap. If she were fat and dressed regular people would have left her alone and would have just thought (and not expressed) their rude and justified thoughts
September 22, 2011 at 3:13 pm
It’s not gross, it’s life… I mean really now, there is NO EXCUSE for putting someone down or making them feel like a freak or worthless. Not one. Not her clothes, or the fact that she thought she was cute, when society says she’s not. She’s fucking beautiful. Everyone’s beautiful. Even you’re beautiful. Every single person on this damned planet. When I look at a person, I see life and it’s exquisite in any form. When have you looked at a flower and thought it was gross? Who the hell cares what size she is? So she eats and doesn’t exercise. Or maybe she does and she has medical problems. Or maybe she’s lazy. Or maybe she has emotional problems. None of that shit matters. What matters is what is in her heart and soul. Who cares about what your body looks like? It’s only the thing that allows you to live life. That allows you to sit there and type on your computer. And what have you chosen to do with your vessel? You’ve chosen to spread hate and negativity. It’s disgraceful. Love each other, love her, and spread love. Treat people how you would like to be treated. Really now, this is elementary stuff here guys.
September 21, 2011 at 4:07 pm
Can I also mention he writer is an effin idiot. This reminded you of Sara baartma? Seriously? Stop trying to reach and make this bigger then it should be. There’s a lot wrong with overweight people who go out their way to display all that “junk”.
December 7, 2011 at 3:47 pm
ME stop sounding like a bigot and a freak. this is a big issue given Barbados’s lousy reputation in the region….what gives YOU the right to decide if this is a big issue? your people are shameless and disgraceful. Every person has the right to wear what they want, wherever, however and whenever they want. It’s basic human right and rights of females to be able to walk freely without fear of being harmed or harassed. Unless there is an exception to this rule in Barbados. If bajans are so holy (rewarding always naked rihanna for always being clothed like a nun) let them say it out loud, yall rich and don’t need regional tourist’s money…. and Yes the pots cursing the kettle cz that girl is attractive, the mawga oman dem need some plantains and dumpling to cover their bones at least. Look how confident she is, maybe that is what got those insecure pots about her case!
September 21, 2011 at 10:57 pm
What she is wearing is irrelevant. I can’t believe some people are seriously blaming this woman for the treatment she got. That is victim-blaming. If a thinner person wore a pink dress and bra, then whatever, it’s not a big deal.
If you don’t like how someone looks in their clothes, keep your mouth shut. I don’t see the fashion police gawking and taking pictures of every person who wears socks with sandals. A short dress on a big girl is not a crime.
It was obviously not an issue about dress, but an issue about fat-shaming and body negativity.
September 21, 2011 at 11:04 pm
“Of course, I lay a fraction of the blame on her, because I do not think that her mode of dress was appropriate, especially for a woman her size.”
In my opinion, you are just as much as a monster as they are. She was HARASSED. And you are blaming the victim. How dare you call yourself a lady?
September 21, 2011 at 11:06 pm
I’d be a lot more comfortable with this article if you didn’t feature all these photos. They were obviously taken without her consent. Plus, disseminating them more widely just means that more prejudiced idiots will sneer and mock this girl, which I doubt is what you want. Would you please consider removing them?
September 21, 2011 at 11:39 pm
I agree with this. The photos are being used as a source of ridicule and victim blaming.
September 22, 2011 at 12:00 am
It’s a double-edged sword. I don’t think the story would have the same impact/legitimacy if people aren’t able to see/decide for themselves.
September 22, 2011 at 12:58 am
What’s there to decide? Short of assaulting someone, nobody can do anything to deserve having a mob jeer and chase after them.
September 23, 2011 at 1:04 am
what are you referring to?
September 23, 2011 at 2:26 am
@Tuluum (sorry, for some reason your comment doesn’t have a reply option next to it, so I’m replying like this)
I’m referring to your statement that people should be able to see the photos and decide for themselves. It should be enough to know that someone got mobbed and vilely abused with no reason, no need for photos to continue to provide access for the trolls. Also I think this woman’s right not to have her photos posted without her knowledge or approval trumps others’ need for information.
At the very least, if you think that having an illustration of the mob makes more impact, the victim should have her identity protected by photoshopping her out or something like that. That way she’d be provided at least some measure of dignity.
September 22, 2011 at 1:33 pm
No, victim-blaming comes from within. If you’re a bigot who engages in victim blaming, you’re going to do it whether there’s a picture there or not.
September 21, 2011 at 11:30 pm
she looks like a hoe tho.. she doesnt look decent at all. and no matter what size she is.. she could carry her self and look like a young lady. Fat or not.. her bra is showing and thats isnt classy. good for her.
September 22, 2011 at 1:37 am
Who are you to judge? Has she actually come out and said she was a prostitute? Even if she was a prostitute, does that make her less of a human? Does that take away her rights to walk down a street without being harassed?
Just because she doesn’t fit your standards doesn’t mean she deserves that treatment.
September 22, 2011 at 2:05 pm
Whats your problem, it takes one to know one. Jealousy gets you nowhere, Thats a fine thick beautiful black woman. I am 100% sure she’s more qualified and educated than you are. Have you ever stop to think her size might be the cause of her having an illness, so why label her as a hoe?
September 21, 2011 at 11:38 pm
There is no excuse or justification for publicly degrading, dehumanizing or mocking another human being. It’s bullying and it’s wrong. Whether you disagree with their size, or attire you still have the option to look the other way or to kindly say ‘Honey, you may want to wear a little something over here’. If you are that offended then report her for public indecency and let authorities take over. These images are nothing short of barbaric and cruel (as well as a PR nightmare). I have -never- seen a crowd react to a woman like this in my life and their comfort with acting this way openly is scary on its own. Attempts to justify the mob or pass the blame onto the young woman just emphasize that some really think this is acceptable and that people don’t choose their -reactions-. I truly hope that is not the case.
September 21, 2011 at 11:40 pm
Bajans are petty, mean and vile creatures. And none of those women should be pointing fingers. All of them are ugly as all hell.
September 22, 2011 at 1:38 pm
OIC. Well, next time we’ll be sure to submit a resume to your highness for verification of our physical worthiness.
September 21, 2011 at 11:42 pm
I’m a little irritated that the writer lays a little bit of the blame on the victim. They way she dressed is not an invitation to be taunted and teased. Victim blaming is not cool and in this case makes the writer’s disgust of the Bajans’ behavior a little back-handed.
September 22, 2011 at 12:48 am
Also, if you think this woman bears even a bit of responsibility for this because of the way she was dresses, just ask yourself – do you really think that a thin white girl in even skimpier clothing (for example, a bikini and a beach wrap) would get the same kind of abuse?
September 22, 2011 at 1:32 am
Wow, this is fcked up. But srsly, why was she wearing that dress? I understand ppl have a right to wear what they want, but damn. O_o
September 22, 2011 at 2:15 am
I think she looks hella sexy. No one should police people’s bodies OR attire.
September 22, 2011 at 9:11 am
No one deserves to publicly ridiculed and taunted because of their physical appearance, regardless of what they are wearing. Even if she wanted to go shopping in a bikini, it’s her body and her decision. She has the right to wear what she wants and go about her business without being hassled. The people involved should be ashamed, and it says a lot about their mentality that they would actually invest their time in making a complete stranger unhappy.
September 27, 2011 at 3:26 pm
Somebody said EVEN if she wanted to shop in a “bikini” she should’ve been allowed?
Had that been the case you would’ve seen a different “type” of CROWD comprising
of ALL “men” chasing her down the street.
Also what would’ve been in their “hands” would’ve been a part of their ANATOMY
and not mobile phones taking pictures!
You get the “picture”???
September 22, 2011 at 10:56 am
“I lay a fraction of the blame on her, because I do not think that her mode of dress was appropriate, especially for a woman her size.”
No. This right here is what this ignorance stems from. How did you come to this way of thinking? Because someone along the way told you that a fat woman is supposed to cover up from head to toe so that she can be pleasing to YOUR eyes. What makes people think that other human beings should look good for THEM. She is dressed obviously as a woman who finds herself sexy. Good for her. That is all that matters. That is her body that takes her from point A to B and at the end of the day YOU have absolutely no say in her health, her attire, or her way of thinking and she has NO say on yours.
September 22, 2011 at 1:32 pm
No blame should be placed on this woman for how she was treated..”I lay a fraction of the blame on her, because I do not think that her mode of dress was appropriate, especially for a woman her size” are you kidding me?
just because shes big she cant dress the way she wants?
why? because society says its not beautiful, or its wrong?
with a statement like that your whole post becomes hypocritical.
300lbs or not, this woman did NOT deserve what happened to her, and she should not be blamed for this.
i honestly think shes a beautiful woman, form what i can see in the photos.
you should share in the shame that these people have, because you are just as bad as they are.
September 22, 2011 at 1:52 pm
“Of course, I lay a fraction of the blame on her, because I do not think that her mode of dress was appropriate, especially for a woman her size. However, there are far more pressing issues that deserve ridicule.”
That’s like saying a rape victim brought it on herself because of what she wore that day…seriously you’re a fucking columnist…!! Many women get taunted, teased, bullied, raped, and looking for an excuse for why it might have been okay is just wrong! The teasing just shouldn’t have happen. What these people in Barbados did was completely uncalled for, and they should be ashamed and embarrassed of themselves, no matter what that young woman was wearing.
September 22, 2011 at 1:54 pm
The blond in the green shirt should have tried touching me, she would have been laid out…You can use your words but she had no right to lay hands on her….
September 22, 2011 at 2:21 pm
I agree that the people displayed an inappropriate behaviour, but half of this woman buttocks is exposed!!! No woman, of any shape, size or colour should dress up with half of her behind exposed like that! If she had just put on leggings it would have been a whole different story! Overweight women can dress up in a sexy way without looking degrading and slutty! Next time she will think twice before going out like that! It is human nature to make fun of what we think is funny. Is not just in Barbados, wherever she goes she will get the same reaction from people! I don’t care what people say but this is the truth! I was a victim of bullies too so I know what I am saying.
September 22, 2011 at 2:26 pm
As an American, I’m frightened and disgusted by this display. I have visited Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, but I have never been to Barbados…and now I don’t know if I would ever go. What if I’m wearing the “wrong” outfit and people verbally attack me on the street? I may not be nearly as heavy as this woman but I’m white and I have tattoos and sure, my look “draws attention”. Does that mean I’m going to get harassed? Probably not, because I’m white. And that disgusts me so much that I don’t even want to spend my money to travel to a place like that. Way to advertise the ‘real’ Barbados, when I’m sure that tourism is one of their biggest economic supporters.
Also, if you start a sentence with “I’m not blaming the victim, BUT…” chances are, YOU’RE BLAMING THE VICTIM. It’s the same as saying, “I’m not trying to be racist, BUT…” hello. Everyone knows that something really racist is going to follow. Did her outfit allow for men to rape her, too? If she had been raped, would you all be saying that a woman who “asks for attention gets it”?! Or is there some sort of fine, invisible line that’s drawn between verbal and sexual abuse????
November 9, 2011 at 12:47 pm
Amen to all that you said, but I wouldn’t forfeit going to Barbados just because of this one incident. I’ve never heard that Barbadians treat visitors badly, so I’m going to give them a pass this time.
I’m of Jamaican descent and would love to visit Barbados as I’ve mostly heard good things from my friends who have visited. I’ll make sure to “dress right” — whatever the hell that means.
September 22, 2011 at 3:39 pm
If the mob of crowd was purrrrfect looking and pretty then I might’ve been able to understand, but I can clearly see some Fugly looking women laughing and pointing. Could it be that the bajans already knew that their features are NOT PRETTY, so in order to feel good about their insecurities, they have to put someone down?
Please stay in barbados, the bahamas dont need any of this, we’ve got some very big beautiful black girls in the bahamas, we do not want any of you ugly barbados women to come here and ridicule any of them.
December 3, 2011 at 1:25 pm
And this is an acceptable comment? Moron. Look around in ur country and u will see a lot of Bajans who immigrated there and has made an impact in the civil service field, just saying.
September 22, 2011 at 4:19 pm
Serve har right, whey the hell she gone ah the people dem country dress so fah, put on clothes, not bcuz it is embraced here in Jamaica, should she believe that everywhere it is normal. That will teach her to dress properly. Ms. Kitty and all that big fat fluffy diva should be ostracized, duttu mouth Kartel mek Jamaicans no hab no pride in themselves bcuz ah dem mek people feel like them sey dem look good practically naked
September 22, 2011 at 4:40 pm
Please cut the bs. This woman is overweight and dressed like shes a size 4.
Lose some weight man, it nuh good fi u health.
September 22, 2011 at 7:17 pm
@ Really now whatever kind of name that is. Do you know why this girl is obese? Stop casting judgement when you do not know facts. Of course it is unhealthy for someone to be this size but hey please before you judge do your research. I do agree with you on the dressing but stop there and criticise that but hey, you just dnt know WHY!!!!!!!! SO, STOP, THINK, ASK AND FIND OUT BEFORE YOU JUDGE.
September 22, 2011 at 6:59 pm
I think that this is sad, however, I don’t hold any sympathy for the lady. Look at how she’s dressed! I know that there are apparel that can fit her shape perfectly. Secondly, how a person is dressed can have positive-or negative remarks. Partly I put the blame on the citizens of Barbados, gawking at her as if they have never seen someone that size before! It’s 50/50.
September 22, 2011 at 7:12 pm
I have always heard that Bajans behave like they are superior to other Carribean Islands and personally I don’t see anything special about them. So, OK maybe this girl’s dressing was a bit, should I say too daring for daytime wear., but what rights does anyone have to ridicule and bully someone in this way? God created men in his own image and I am not saying that sometimes we should not be in control of what we turn out to be, but who knows why this girl is of the size she is? Who knows if it can be helped? Who knows if she is suffering from some kind of illness making her the size she is?
I am disappointed that Bajans are so illiterate, small minded bullies who think they have what it takes to be of superior quality. All you Bajans can kiss my proud Jamaican ASS!!!!!!!!!
January 3, 2012 at 10:14 pm
Another ignorant bitch….I should start generalizing all of you jamaicans but then I would be called an “awful Bajan” and a “bully” but i will just simply respond to your dumb ass by saying, All of you Jamaicans can KISS MY BAJAN ASS!
September 22, 2011 at 8:10 pm
perhaps the way she was dressed had alot to do with it,but still that behaviour was still wrong.
September 22, 2011 at 9:07 pm
That is Bajan for you. This island thinks that their shit never stinks. But have you ever listened to them talk amongst themselves they are the most ignorant pieces of trash I have ever met.
December 3, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Shut ur ass,the island is 96% literate, the fact that amongst themselves a conversation can go on without a single name called is being Bajan, like any other nationality.
September 22, 2011 at 9:15 pm
SHAMELESS PEOPLE AND SHAMELESS COUNTRY…ESPECIALLY WHEN 80% OF YOUR BLOODY COUNTRY IS OVER WEIGHT….
December 3, 2011 at 1:36 pm
Who the fuck are u? and where did u get that stat from? Jackass!!!!
December 6, 2011 at 10:28 pm
Wow!!! There seems to be a lot of hate aimed at Barbados which has obviously been festering. I personally do not in any way condone the behavior of those involved but, I also wouldn’t be so ignorant as to blame every man, woman and child of the island for the their (the crowd) awful behavior. Please stop this childish” my island’s better than yours” crap and grow up!! Reality check……most of the world doesn’t know the difference between one island or the other nor do they care!
September 22, 2011 at 9:33 pm
Wow… why is it that every time someone comments, it must be about Barbadians thinking that they are more superior than other Caribbean people? The issue at hand is the young lady’s attire. I am not condoning what those women did, because personally I would have glanced and gone along my way. Never generalize because of what a group of people (who are clearly silly) did… all Barbadians are not that way. Many of these comments in this forum have clearly expressed the hatred that some of you seem to have towards Barbadians. I would implore some of you to grow up and stop turning this into Barbados vs other islands…
September 23, 2011 at 11:09 am
I agree. Some of these comments are so uncalled for. Such a pity.
December 3, 2011 at 1:34 pm
Well said, nothing but pure hate for Bajans.(smh)
September 22, 2011 at 9:44 pm
SHAME ON ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO WHERE THERE BEHAVING LIKE THAT
That woman has the right to wear whatever she wants to wear.
So, because she is of a larger size she is not supposed to wear what she wants? People are so ignorant.
To see people behave like that towards her is totally DISGUSTING!!!!
If you do not like it do not look; why insult her and treat her like that?
SHAME ON ALL OF THEM!!!
September 22, 2011 at 11:54 pm
Ok I have to comment because these comments are pissing me off. First of all, why is everyone using this incident to spew hate on Barbados and to satisfy their need to feel like their country is better than Barbados? Yes those people were wrong and ignorant to do what they did, but that was only a few people. Why is everyone acting like EVERYONE in Barbados is mean? In fact, if you would stop hating so much and do your homework, you would realize that BAJANS were DISGUSTED by this incident! It was also highlighted in Bajan news, so instead of using this incident to compare your childish “whose country is better than whose” rivalries, let’s focus on the issue at hand: human beings need to stop being so judgmental of each other and learn to accept everyone no matter their shape, size, colour, class or creed.
September 23, 2011 at 10:57 am
I agree with all of your comments. It was only a few and not the whole of Barbados.
September 23, 2011 at 12:00 am
Oh and shame on you Coretta Joe, for writing such an ignorant, biased, hate-filled and generalized article which only served to incite and promote your own hatred toward Barbados!
September 23, 2011 at 12:14 am
Correction to above statement: Jay Blessed wrote the article, not Coretta Joe. Coretta Joe only wrote on the commentary.
September 23, 2011 at 12:22 am
FYI: If you would read the story carefully from the top to bottom, you will know that JAY BLESSED did NOT write this story.
September 23, 2011 at 12:46 am
Fair enough, I apologize for saying that you wrote it, however, u still posted it.
September 23, 2011 at 12:50 am
You also commented on it and I quote: “Barbados, is this how you treat your visitors??????? Total wotlessness!” So don’t try to disassociate yourself from the article and the criticism I gave you. You may not have written the article, but by posting it and making that comment, you have encouraged all the hateful comments made on this forum toward the general Bajan population.
September 23, 2011 at 11:14 am
Sensible person you are. All this does a brew a bunch of criticism on an Island they know very, very, very little of.
September 23, 2011 at 7:06 am
This poor women did not deserve this, and she’s so beautiful too.
September 23, 2011 at 9:19 am
ITS INTERESTING THAT ALL THEM BLACK FOLKS FOLLOWING HER SEEM TO HAVE NO OTHER IMPORTANT PERSONAL BUSINESS TO CONDUCT IN THEIR OWN LIVES OTHER THAN TO FOLLOW THIS WOMAN AND TAUGHT HER LIKE A BUNCH OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH THEIR OWN SELF ESTEEM PROBLEMS! NO OTHER PARTICULAR DESTINATION HUH! NO WONDER THESE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES KEEP SHITTIN’ ON YOU! STOP ACTING LIKE 21ST CENTURY SLAVES ON A PLANTATION AND FIGHT THE POWER MUTHA’ FUCKERS!
TIRED OF DUMB NIGGERISH SHIT!
September 23, 2011 at 2:11 pm
with an outfit like that who will not notice, its like smiling with bad teeth don’t you think people will notice? but shame on bim” they should have still respected the woman nobody should be treated in such a way.
September 23, 2011 at 5:12 pm
its absolutely ridiculous that such a thing happened but sweety if your reading this ur face was the only pretty one in that crowd.
January 12, 2012 at 2:42 pm
yuh done know……. d gyal is d best lookin one dey
September 24, 2011 at 12:18 am
first, this has nothing to do with black, white, bajan, or tourist, so do not say nothing about bajans mistreating fellow black woman or people from other islands. i wish i was there to see the situation because it just seem like something else was going on that the camera didn’t catch because people are not going to just surround surround a person and shame them like that. everyone is judging the pic not the situation.
“things look a lot different from the outside looking in”

I’m shocked. I’m over 300lbs myself and come from the UK to visit my parents in Barbados as often as I can, and I’ve never received any adverse attention on account of my size…the odd cheeky comment, but nothing like what seems to have gone on with this lady.
As much as I am big and proud I can’t say I’m certainly not as daring in my choice of attire…but hey, what you can’t hide you should decorate, and I applaud her for her confidence, and let’s hope the ‘good’ people of Barbados won’t repeat this kind of behaviour – there are bigger things (pardon the pun) going on in this world.
September 24, 2011 at 4:16 pm
In Trinidad that would of never happen I am honestly shocked and appalled about what I read and saw , how can a group of mature people be so disgustingly disrespectful and ignorant towards someone because of there plus size stature , I mean seriously that is how you all treat people who different from you . Love thy neighbour as thyself its a beautiful quote from the bible make it yall foundation bless you and god loves you still
January 12, 2012 at 2:44 pm
yuh done know
September 24, 2011 at 4:25 pm
I agree with most of what you said. I have to say though, you are very wrong in saying she should not have dressed the way she did, and you basically contradicted everything you said in this article by stating “especially for a woman her size.” what is that supposed to mean? Just because she’s a big girl she has to dress a certain way? Yes Im disgusted in the way these people treated her, but Im also disgusted in you implying that just because she’s a big girl that she is restricted in what she can wear. She can wear the same things anyone else can wear. Why would she not wear that dress? Just because you wouldn’t like her to? That is just wrong. She has every right in the world to wear anything she wants.
September 24, 2011 at 8:06 pm
Well Bajans, let me say one thing after molesting the Jamaican woman at the airport and now ridiculing this woman you don’t want us to hate you – trust me. We Jamaicans will do bad things to any Bajan who passes his place – trust me. And don’t give me an crap about not all Bajans are like that. Like dogs, Poodle, Rotties, Dobermans, Bajans – all dogs. I want to go to Barbados and get ridiculed and see if mih nuh grab the fuss Bajan dog and start put on some bitch-lick and see if them ridicule me. That’s what she sould have done, grab the yellow-haired one or the bleacher and buss dem ass.
November 9, 2011 at 12:56 pm
lol.
You are very wrong, but had to laugh at your last sentence.
She did the right thing — no violence, no cussing, just walk away from the idiots. They look worse than her.
January 3, 2012 at 10:26 pm

January 16, 2012 at 1:32 am
All them expletives you using are Jamaican. You Bajan buffoon. We have so much influence on the rest of the Caribbean that the Bajan dogs who for some strange reason think they are the “Pearl of the Antilles” are just jealous. That stinking cesspool of an island can never be better than Jamaica in anything, well maybe being dogs and second best to Jamaica.
September 24, 2011 at 10:24 pm
That lady should have never been treated in this type of behavior. First of all she has the right to dress how she wants. No one on this earth deserve this crap some of these bajans ladies were demonstrating. I think this should never happen again BARBADOS. We are not in slavery times no more.
September 25, 2011 at 2:49 am
this should be treated with respect regardless the attire that she is wearing or the weight that she carries, she is somebody’s child. Bajans are just a bunch of fools, who enjoys bring others down. Why is there a circus follow her around? I can’t see the point, but more power to her and i hope she can find peace despite the level of uncomfort she feels
. Hang in there and do your thing, you are not the largest by far. love u.
September 26, 2011 at 10:26 am
Everyone is talking about how she should be treated AS A HUMAN BEING based on her size and what she is wearing…. is she less of a human being? Does she deserve to be treated less like one because of it. When the slimmer girls are assaulting us with their cellulite and bodies overflowing costumes during carnival, we say nothing of it… we will say “well that is for carnival time.” Thing is we are still assaulted by it daily because a certain type of dressing is excused if you are below a certain weight and within range of what “others” will generally consider is appropriate for your size. Whether your personal thought is that she is dressed appropriately or decently or not, the real issue at hand is… she did not deserve to be ridiculed or treated scornfully. If her dress moved you so much (though I don’t see how it would be your place or business), why not sidle up to her and caution her if you so deem it fit. What these people did speaks to the ugliness of their souls and their obvious lack of anything productive to do that day… mob mentality at work. I lived in Barbados for 3 years so I will say that I know that the majority of Bajans are not like this, but still I can’t help but shake the feeling that this specific case could and would not have happened elsewhere… but then again… in simple terms, it’s still bullying and that happens everywhere in some shape or form. She’s a beautiful woman anyhow you look at it and I trust that she knows that and won’t let this incident affect her esteem nor her confidence negatively.
September 27, 2011 at 4:03 pm
This article reeks of hypocrisy. ‘oh, how terrible, all these people making fun of her, shame on them, she’s human’ and then in the next breath ‘but she REALLY shouldn’t be dressed like that.’ Victim blaming, much?
November 11, 2011 at 2:33 pm
U BIG YA DAM SELF! U MAD CAUSE SHE LOOK BETTA THAN U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 29, 2011 at 9:07 pm
Never knew Bajans were so hostile & barbaric? obviously, they are way behind civilisation!! wow!!! never expected such behavior? quite appalled! would never recommend anyone to visit!
October 1, 2011 at 12:00 pm
[...] imagine, that a crowd of Bajans were flocking behind their overweight Jamaican visitor, heckling, ridiculing and making fun of her! Read more HERE. [...]
October 1, 2011 at 10:38 pm
I find it very upsetting to see my bajan brothers and sisters gawking at this lady as if she is from outer space.I am so embarrassed about the whole matter that I would like to apologize on behalf of my bajan people, to both the young woman and everyone here who found this to be distasteful. For those who say bajans think they are better than other Caribbeans,YOU are the only one who think that way.I am bajan and I most certainly do not share that view.Everywhere in this world you go there is always going to be a MIX of people, not any one particular kind. That is proven right here, as this picture is NOT indicative of the entire Barbadian population. We are no better than anyone else nor are we any worse.Just like people, all nations have their own faults and we shouldn’t write them off anymore than we do people. All those who say you won’t go to Barbados are judging the island by those few in the picture and that is not right. How much better are you than they when you adopt that attitude?Judging is judging!………Besides,if you are so shallow as to write off a country based on an isolated incident such as this, then maybe you shouldn’t go to Any country at all………..and more beautiful Barbados for ME!!!
October 2, 2011 at 7:26 pm
shes smart..in a sense for not goin crazy on em cuz that would just be an excuse for them to physically assault her!what a bunch a ghetto low class bitches!!!!who cares how she wanna dress…is it ok for a skinny chick to dress that way..either way the outfit is revealing…but no woman deserves that!!!!
October 3, 2011 at 9:52 pm
Whether she felt like getting attention or she felt like wearing a pink dress while on vacation, it in no way warrants ridicule and bullying. There are plenty of people behind her not looking like the perfect image of health and fitness themselves but they feel like it’s appropriate to attack someone else. Nothing she did warranted this behavior. People need to be adults and hold others accountable for their actions instead of looking for reasons to justify them.
October 5, 2011 at 6:17 pm
Bajans are some disgusting, ignorant and misinformed people if they think it’s okay to taunt someone. I consider people like that vile. There were other big woman in there peering on her. Some islands are just sick and twisted and this one just adds to it. I never ever go there or recommend it there. It’s a horrid environment and shitty country. And I know all people aren’t like that but the mere fact that NO ONE stepped in? THE HELL.
October 5, 2011 at 8:36 pm
Its kinda dumb because since we blacks became free Barbados has always been the Uncle Tom Island…The island where old gay white men go and fuck young black boys and physical good looking black Bajun men. Prosperous island because rich old fretired people invest money and live on Island…But the whites on island realize they can us skin colour on Bajuns…..Bajuns old doors for them…kiss ass its like Uncle Toms Cabin and niggers working cotton field…think boys the singer Rianna she don’t want a bajun dick and she bajun…..We…. boys we love it down here for a weekend So much women looking man……DEH MAN DANCING WITH MAN 3 IN MORNING OH LORD…….this fat jamaican girl she aint no typical Jamaican girl let dem Bajun people go Guyana, Trinidad or Jamaica and see if they don’t get kill…….Don’t call em Bajun boys for nothing….only thing good about Bajuns is easy women nice frying fish….ha ha ha
October 6, 2011 at 12:04 pm
I hope she continues to dress the way she wants to. Screw Barbados!!!
And they say african americans are bad. SMH. Nobody should be followed in the streets like that.
October 10, 2011 at 6:23 pm
shameful
October 18, 2011 at 9:03 pm
It looked like this entire nation was following this young lady even school children what is it the nation had a shut down because of this lady ,who I must say is very beautiful. i dare say these people are behaving like they have never seen a plus size woman, but i look in the crowd and I see some obese women there also or they dont realize that they too are fat i cry shame on u bajans SHAME.
This Girl could seriously harm herself because of the insensitivity of these fools i pray god she does.
October 31, 2011 at 10:01 pm
First off Barbados have the blackest, most HARD face woman in the Caribbean. Their hairstyles are always ghetto. You ride in a bus over there and you can’t see over anyone’s head. Hair spray till the hair stand up and touch the top of d van. Look at that female version of Sisqo in the pic, she stand right next to Laquanda who look like she can’t even spell she own name… Prime example!. And they wanna laugh at this girl who is quite cute. I have never seen such ignorance, so what the damn girl fat and she exposing her rolls. Take a stare and go on your damn business. A bunch of ignorant fools inhabit that island, and that’s why they sound like hot air coming out of a donkeys rear when they talk. HEEHAW Barbados… HEEHAW!
January 3, 2012 at 9:58 pm
And where are you from? Cause I HIGHLY DOUBT you’re accent is any better……the Bajan voice is the most beautiful and unique in the Caribbean…the rest sound like knock off imitations of jamaicans (which is NOTHING to be proud of)
November 6, 2011 at 5:06 pm
My heart goes out to the young lady harassed by the mob of Bajans in the street. Please keep in mind that all Bajans are not like that. You cannot judge a country for the few ignorant people that live there. We are all one Caribbean and we showed learn to treat each other with respect. I love my Bajan culture, but this behavior was UNACCEPTABLE.
November 7, 2011 at 8:03 am
I like All Women Thick or skinny but sad to say the majority of Bajans have been totally brain washed by the western concept of beauty; tall, slim with blonde hair. Now get real you dumb fucks(majority rules) You all are stupid and boring people— that you make something so simple, entice a crowd of hundreds. Guess you guys dont get out alot. If you were more hospitable i would invite you to passa passa but i think its best you stay ova there we will be more than glad to stay here with our jerk chicken reggae dancehall bob marley marcus garvey usain bolt and yohan blake.you guys got rihana and badmind dwl Swagging TOO BAD FOR YOU Aint my fault you missed the best boat

Dam we also mis the boat next time please wait for us, but you know “yute” in our country we have lots of Bells and when does bells ring we go running towards the sound. Please excuse my my writing.
November 9, 2011 at 5:13 pm
the most uncouth nationality I ever met in the Caribbean were Bajans…often classless and with a totally inflated view of themselves…and what does the island have to offer? I haven’t visited there in at least 10 years and have no intention of going in a hurry….I much prefer to spend my dollars without being cursed at the same time….bunch of losers….
November 10, 2011 at 1:23 pm
The young lady could have chosen a different mode of dress yes I agree with that, but 300 pounds or not, the behavior that was displayed was baseless ignorance. I have visited Barbados many times and also have very good friends who are Bajans, and they are good people. I have seen countless white visitors including ones that are bigger than this young lady, who were dressed worst than her, and I saw not one Bajan following them around town. So why this young lady?. if you look at the people in the picture they could also be ridiculed, lace front weaves, blond wigs, totally looking like clowns. You can clearly tell that she was uncomfortable, but Karma is a bigger bitch than all these women in the pictures, with this age of technology be careful of what you sow because she will come back to kick your ass 10 times as hard. These people look like they have forgotten that they too could find themselves in a situation like this, at any given time, and that they have mothers, daughters, aunts, and grandmothers also.
November 10, 2011 at 5:20 pm
its is shameful to see the ignorance of this magnitude from grown ass people. The PHAT girl was looking good in her dress. Don’t make ignorance stop you from dressing the way you want!

Watch Matt Lauer as he appeared today in Barbados: http://www.jayblessed.com/?p=15031
November 16, 2011 at 7:39 pm
now i will aree that the way they behaved was absolutely wronga nd disgraceful towards their island but at the same time for a young woman that size should know how to dress to compliment her figure…because what she had worn that also was very disgraceful towards her figure….
November 26, 2011 at 5:54 pm
Ok, I understand the writer’s quarrel with Some Bajans behavor where this young lady is concerned, however you cant say all Bajans are like that. I am a Trini and I have visited Barbados on a number of occasions with my family and friends, some of whom are over weight and we have never had this experience, I have to say after I read and looked at the pics that you posted I understand why the people on the street reacted in the manner that they did. I would admit they took it too far by following her around and doging her. But she did bring some of it upon herself. She is dressed very inappropriately for someone that size. I mean come on people, we like to do things that are outandish and when we are called out we vex. Why? She is 300 pounds!!!!!!! why is she in a dress that is sooo short even I wouldn’t wear it and I’m 110lb and 5’3ft. You get what you put out, so as much as I feel it for her, this should motivate her to do something about her weight and dress to suit her body. I love women who are comfortable with who they are, however I love and admire a woman who is respectful to themselves. I advise to this young lady is, for the sake of your health and if you want to live a long, health, full life, drop some of that weight, and if you want to be respected in any society, respect your self…
December 7, 2011 at 5:10 pm
WHEN IT IS CARNIVAL TIME EVERY BODY COMES OUT NAKED why should one day be different from the rest she is free to dress how she wants ,according to another comment if it selling in her size she is free to wear it.
November 27, 2011 at 2:07 pm
as a plus size woman myself who weighs more than her i walked that very street in barbados and didnt go through what she went through it is what she has on as plus size women we bring attention to ourselves whether it is wanted or not but IF WE DONT KNOW HOW TO DRESS OURSELVES PROPERLY WE SUBJECT OURSELVES TO UNWANTED NEGATIVE ATTENTION. the ppl are wrong yes but at the end of the day if all women small, big, tall, short, or indifferent dress appropriately we wont have some of the incidents we have today
December 9, 2011 at 10:08 am
Well said!!
November 27, 2011 at 3:55 pm
Ha lord dem baj eh try dat on a rini and wel will fly ya fish
December 4, 2011 at 6:59 pm
What de Fuck….Ever so often there are some things that just piss me off…..I saw this artice and I was appalled…how on earth could people be so cruel…this was like a lynching of the poor girl….just imagine if this was your mother, sister, daughter…I have never been to Barbados…but when I city what looks like half the city go after one person….I am totally turned off…I don’t even care what the girl was wearing if they selling it in her size then she has all rights to buy it and wear it well….A wrong thing could never be a right thing….My heart goes out to this girl she must have been scared shitless to see a mob of people after her and people even pulling at her in a foreign country…I don’t know what the people hoped to gain were they going to follow her till she lost weight – or were they trying to bully her into buying an outfit that they thought was appropriate…oh how this angers me….just imagine if someone tried to bully you or your family into doing something that you did not want to do….talking about the girls outfit and that she was looking for attention is like saying to me…because I choose to where a short dress I looking to get raped, and if I do i look for …..that how ignorant can people really be…..May god have mercy on you people of Barbados…bcause I am sure (that if any of you have family or friends to dear to go where this young lady has gone)…that no one else especially in Barbados would have any mercy…I am even more appalled that not even one person in that whole crowd tried to come to the young ladies defence…how sick can the bajan people really be?
December 4, 2011 at 9:10 pm
To all people who support this ridiculing at any level, shame on you. This is terrible people. It makes no sense that some people say this is not all Bajans but some bajans. To the outside world, this is how people in the Caribbean behave so I am disappointed with bajans….shame on you.
We are part of a diverse caribbean and a diverse world. We survive on tourism where cultures, ethnic groups, religions, races, you name it, are forced to co-exist even for the shortest period of time. We, people of the caribbean should exhibit greater tolerance for our differences.
Do I think she was not dressed appropriately? I think her outfit did not flatter her figure. People, I see many visitors who through their dress or whatever can cause brain freeze, but do you follow them and heckle them? That is bullying and unacceptable. We should not try to justify this sort of behaviour because it is wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.
Being part bajan I would like to convey my apology to the young lady for the unfair manner that a few idle minds treated her. Barbados, cleanup your act. No bs excuses about looking for it. CLEAN IT UP!!!!
December 4, 2011 at 10:24 pm
Wham?! ..all these people following this lady have no jobs ?…If there truly is any intelligence in Barbados, those simple folks following that young lady, just threw it all away.
December 4, 2011 at 11:15 pm
It is an understatement to say that I am totally DISGUSTED by this IGNORANT & SMALL MINDED behavior. Whether or not this young lady was a tourist or one of your own, it is absolutely disrespectful to treat someone like that.
It is preposterous that some of you would say she was looking for attention so she got it. Where they do that at? SMDH! This is just like someone saying it is ok for a prostitute to get raped or someone who wears shorts or mini skirts deserved to be raped. By no means did she ask a crowd of ignorant asses to follow her. They might as well as asked her for her autograph. Was this the 1st time they saw a fat person with little clothing on?
I remember when I was a little girl & Bajans were frequent in St. Lucia, it was real easy to spot them. They used to be the thick chicks with the shortest shorts on. No one followed or taunted them then. Why do it to someone else now.
If you find her dressing so humorous then laugh your asses off with your friends and be on your merry way. Don’t invade a person’s space & grab their arms while others jester & take photos to upload on social networks so you can have your laugh of the day.
This type of behavior coming from a people who pride themselves on being technologically & economically advanced in the Caribbean is tres ironic. I guess you’re still working on your social advancement & people skills.
This incident is unfortunate because it not only makes Barbados look ignorant, but it also makes the entire Caribbean look ignorant.
Get it together!!!
December 5, 2011 at 8:16 am
So much for Caribbean Unity, it just take one over size caribbean woman doing some crazy shit to bring out so much anger.
December 5, 2011 at 1:08 pm
[...] was in March. Fast forward to the most popular story on this website about Jamaican tourist Shekina Walters who was treated with utter disrespect and disgust on her visit to Barbados in [...]
December 6, 2011 at 8:07 am
Wow. I am part bajan with my dad’s family from the limestone rock in the middle of the ocean. I have lots of bajan friends and am appalled at the behaviour but not surprised. I was there on vacation once with my girlfriend who is athletic with a great build and nice ass. She wore her shorts and she normally did and was strutting through the streets shopping. Now she is in love with Barbados god knows why and was going on with no care i n the world. When like this young lady, she was heckled by women for the length of her shots and men proceeded to follow and one even grabbed her arm. Guess he will never do that again cause I DECKED his ass. For a people who take pride and confidence is being the best in the Caribbean area “but not part of it”. You displayed a mentally that has not evolved from your sugar cane days.
People have a right to express themselves as they please if Ms. Walter was amusing laugh, chuckle but do it in a respectable manner and now swam the young lady and invade her privacy by grabbing onto her arm and find it amusing.
This is ridiculous and hopefully same day you PEOPLE will learn.
Respect is owned and not given. Time for your country to earn theirs.
December 6, 2011 at 9:01 am
No body was ridiculing that girl. They were giving her props and she was relishing all the attention. How many of u were actually there?? Did u guys actually interview the girl for her opinion? And fuck alla wunna who got problems wid rasshole barbados! Bunch of ignorant close minded fucks. I shud talk about wunna savage-ass jamaicans and dumb-ass grenadians… but then i would be just as low as u all.
January 16, 2012 at 12:50 pm
i like how yuh didnt say trinis….good …
December 6, 2011 at 3:39 pm
Bastards
December 6, 2011 at 8:47 pm
Any bajan who took part in following and harassing this girl should be ashamed and STFU. I say this because there are girls in Barbados, born and bred who are this size or bigger and have a similar sense of style. Why ridicule her? Why keep drawing unnecessary negative attention to ourselves as nation. We’re supposed to be better than this.
December 6, 2011 at 10:05 pm
What a shame. I am sure that if it were a Caucasian the bajans would not have behaved in that way. This show our inability to love ourselves as we are. The young lady was free to wear what she wanted particularly if she was on a holiday. She was not naked there are other people who expose so much more skin than she was exposing. I am sure the sisters who were jerring will be at church the following Sunday saying how they love the Lord who they have not seen and not having the capacity to see the Lord in a fellow human being whether they considered her misguided or not.
December 7, 2011 at 4:55 pm
i am so sorry for her it is a shame to see that fat persons cannot be respected as other people .i have seen persons of all sizes dress far worst than she did .For adult people to follow her like that its ridiculous, what kind of example are you setting for your children. What will you all say to GOD when he ask you why you did what you did to this person? i will certainly think twice about visiting your country!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 7, 2011 at 5:01 pm
you know what, most of you are uncomfortable in your own skin and this young lady is very comfortable, you wish you could be like her ,wear what you want and be happy .SHAME SHAME ON YOU BAJANS
December 11, 2011 at 10:15 pm
As a plus size women this is great to know! I may have spent my hard earned money to go there on vacation with my plus size friends. Now I can put a thick black line through it as a place I will never, ever visit.
December 15, 2011 at 8:05 am
I must say this is rather interesting. I came on this website trying to look at a music video I couldn’t find anywhere else on the internet when I saw this article. Without looking at anything more then the first picture I can tell you what the problem is. The woman is very cute, even beautiful if you truely look, but she came out in a dress that covers NOTHING and she has to be around a US size 26. I am a US citizen plus size girl and when I go party, I can wear “party clothes” that do not look like “stripper attire”. So, I think its the cheap way she dressed that everyone has a problem with. And the picture of the older lady “spanking her butt” just proves they thought they had a daytime stripper or whore in their midst. Not saying she is one, just that she APPEARS to be dressed as one. Have decency enough to wear clothes that don’t make you look unflattering, whether they are party clothes or everyday clothes!!
December 15, 2011 at 11:39 pm
big people should know that they cant wear certain outfits, she looked for that
December 19, 2011 at 7:34 am
I’m very disheartened by this . . . I mean, seriously? In this day & age? I remember travelling to Mexico back in 2008 and being stared at and taunted because my friends and I were black, I mean, not all of them participated, many were very accommodating, but at the same time I couldn’t understand why in the 21st Century people were so pigheaded. In that respect I can sympathize with Ms Walters. It’s not a nice thing to be jeered at because of your race or your size and although I agree she was scantily clad and perhaps ‘looking for attention’ we have to understand that that is the way she chose to ‘express herself’ and in today’s world the right to self expression is held very dear by many. Sure, she could have worn something else, but do these people not have any diginity? You would really stop what you’re doing and follow someone around just to laugh and point at them? Grow up and learn some manners!
December 21, 2011 at 6:12 am
This act reveals that BARBADOS people are very unrespectful on their tourists. they are so brutal in their attitudes, has the mean and nasty mentality. Shame on you-BARBADOS PEOPLE. I wish to never visit BARBADOS . ( my friends and family also)
December 28, 2011 at 2:42 pm
Who among you can pinpoint a bajan in this crowd? This incident occurred in Barbados but it does not mean that the followers are all bajans. I am sure the population consist of Vincentians, Guyanese, Grenadians, Barbadians, Jamaicans and other Caribbean people. So find out before pointing fingers because the same people that you are ashamed of and cussing may be from your own country. Think about it.
December 28, 2011 at 10:25 pm
Jamaicans haven’t learned by now not to go o the Barbados, surprised she got through the airport.
April 12, 2012 at 10:10 am
Your comment is the only sensible one. Why are Jamaicans still travelling to Barbados? Leave them alone! Its obvious that you are not welcomed sheeesh. I am a Jamaican and i will never be exposed to their hatred because i just wont go
December 30, 2011 at 10:46 pm
SHAME ON YOU BARBADOS! Is This How You Treat Your Fat Visitors?
I’m from Barbados and I have to say that this behavior is totally wrong. Yes, it was her chose of dressing, but…the behavior I’m seeing displayed is really fucked up. I can’t believe grown ass people really up behind this woman taking pictures and laughing. I mean we looking through the fucking glass like obama inside, what de rassole is this. And fucking yes, it’s true that if this was a white woman we would have never done this. It’s just the truth. But I have one thing to tell some jamaicans. Please stop blanketing the hold country because of a few out of orders. That just don’t make sense.
January 3, 2012 at 10:32 pm
I am sorry that this had to happen to this young lady BUT I must say that its really really ridiculous how people get on here and just start blistering the whole Bajan race and the entire island of Barbados…i feel those very people never liked Barbados to begin with….If so, then thats your issue…because chances are there are millions of other people out there that don’t like YOUR island! Okay? I Love MY Barbados! Its not perfect but its MY HOME! Maybe if you had more pride in your country you wouldn’t be on here cursing out and bad talking another….So come back to me when you have pride in your own heritage and have dropped the ignorance…Enjoy the rest of your day.
January 6, 2012 at 8:31 am
i belief the writer of this article is biased. am from Zimbabwe and i tell you we welcum our visitors well well. the people where not ridiculing her for her weight but rather what she was putting on
January 10, 2012 at 6:13 pm
As a plus sized Bajan myself who travels to the island a few times a year I have to say that SOME of the Bajans and other caribbean people who live on the island aren’t so welcoming. I’ve been stared at while walking through the same streets as this young lady but it wasn’t to this extent. And I have to say that most of the people (females in my case) who were staring and making small remakes were a mixture of Bajans, Guyanese, Trinis etc.. To all of you who are saying that Bajans as a whole wicked, rude, think they’re better than anyone else etc. are very narrow minded and ignorant..you shouldn’t pass judgement on a whole country based on some individuals.
January 16, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Honestly… the only good thing outta Barbados is Rihanna. They are not as nice as people think…. And they don’t like Trinidadians….But doh worry every where else luv we…
January 18, 2012 at 8:28 am
I NOTICE THERE ARE HARDLY ANY BAJAN MEN IN THE CROWD TRYING TO GET A PEEK I GUESS THEY REALY ARENT INTO WOMEN
January 21, 2012 at 3:24 pm
Yo Johnny, do you really think that bajan men would waste time looking at that human.
January 21, 2012 at 7:27 am
what I don’t understand is why they are doing this when we know that the Caribbean is the home of full figured women….we love them and respect them.
Mrs Walters if you have a problem well come to Trinidad and Tobago we have enough lover here to share …it is very small minded what have happened there I’m truly ashamed of my Caribbean family very ashamed..
January 21, 2012 at 6:56 pm
Honestly, how many of you trinis, jamaicans, grenadians, and other islanders would actually allow your mothers, sisters, aunts,or friends to walk out the door looking like that. I can guarantee you A bajan woman would stop her at the door, and sa looka you ant lefing in ha lookin so. Imagine this human walking down 5th ave: NYC 12:00 noon in that dress I mean cabs, buses, horse carriages, and even street dancers would be mad is asshole because she teking they money. Seriously now this is just one of the many reasons why we bajans, and jamaicans will never ever ever see eye to eye. We are very different as A people, our social values, our peaceful society our respect for our woman, mothers grandmothers, and dauthers are things we value very much. If this young lady is right for Jamaica, and this is the norm then something is very wrong……..trinis,grenadians,and vincy. Ly me till de three a wana something wana might come to Barbados an see 3or4 asshole, but,goa blima wana gan batup pun 300 rashole bajans. that sharp an smart is asshole that gon put wana in wana fucking place. some old Chapman lane,Emmerton lane talk fa wana cunt…You see we know the history of the caribbean so all of your foolish talk dont faze us we dont play the fool.
January 22, 2012 at 11:04 am
Did you really say allow? don’t you see that’s a grown woman who can chose to dress however she wishes. The only mistake that woman made was going to the Barbados. She obviously doesn’t read the news very much, but she probably will never go there again. She should know better because first of all she’s Jamaican, that’s an attention grabber in it self. Barbados like to brag about literacy rate and being a first world country, but being such a small island it would have been a disgrace if your government could not manage such a small population. Jamaica has been manipulated by foreign influence, Haiti and Cuba, the same. Barbados benefited from not having much to offer the world. To this day the only attention the Barbados get is when they mistreat Jamaicans. Other than that know one really know you all exist, and that’s been a blessing as far as crime goes. That’s no reason to turn your nose up at others in the Caribbean.
January 22, 2012 at 5:40 pm
Shame you idiot, the sensationalism from Jamaicans is unbelievable I don’t even know where to start, but lets start with you. You wrote Jamaica has been manipulated by foreign influence. Dam,Shame…..man I’ll tell you what I’ll keep it short please read between the lines ok, now you know why Bajans are more into prevention rather than cure. You also wrote that Barbados benefited from not having much to offer the world.Shame please listen Barbados does not worry about having much to offer the world. The leaders of Barbados are more focus on the people of Barbados. Finally you said that Bajans like to brag about literacy rate, and about being first world. Shame Bajans hardly ever brag, or boose. Shame listen up Barbados literacy rates, and first world status where achieve for Bajans by Bajans it was the world that acknowledge those achievements……Jamaicans needs to stop worrying about what they can offer the world and worry about what they can offer Jamaica.
January 30, 2012 at 11:06 pm
Yo james you killing me with talk why dont these people stay out of our country. Yo have you notice how many of them are now going to barbados yet they dont like us. I agree with you they will never be able assimilate into barbados society. Even if you meet A educated jamaican he our she still have A sarcastic way of talking most of them have degrees in sarcasm. Guyanese also suffer from this problem another group of people who think they’er better than bajans.
January 31, 2012 at 12:43 am
I don’t condone this behavior, but as I Bajan, I’ll say this: we’re cynical people. Our humor is crass, we play the dozens with each other all the time and its nothing. Its not fair in this case to dish it out to people that can’t take it, but she could’ve turned around and told all of them to suck it and it would’ve been in good fun. And duh, there’s plus sized women in Barbados, but guess what? Come carnival time, they’re next to the skinny girls wearing the same skimpy outfits, shaking it and not giving a shit.
Also, let me say that if a woman her size walked around like that in the states, people would snap pictures of her and post it on the internet, so it has nothing to do with Barbados
January 31, 2012 at 10:54 pm
u know what i really dont understand is the fact that most of the persons following her were thick or plus sized themselves. some even looked as though they just fall short by just a few pounds. it’s distasteful to know that someone could behave like that far less for a town filled with so called educated people. SHAME ON YOU BAJANS!
January 31, 2012 at 11:33 pm
Really… If she dessed her size no one would have taken notice. I’m not defending the behaviour displayed by the bajans, but seriously what you expect? When you’re big like that, why bring attention to yourself?? if it was a boney woman wearing that it’d still be inappropriate.
February 1, 2012 at 2:33 am
you all are horrible…bajan people are top amongest the world…with all ya pig foot and goat cheese..the woman come to support ya run down island and yall wanna get on so..why yall dont criticize ya own like rhianna for being a bajan junkie…this is how people get hurt…i would have cuss yall ass and slap those who touched me..this is GOD’S world…dont judge barbados
February 2, 2012 at 10:02 pm
Some of us support you 200% Barbados we know firsthand what you are going through. To the Bahamian lady who made the nagative comment about the Bajans do you have any idea the enormous problems that Jamaicans caused in the Bahamas? Finially A country in the West Indies stood up and said no to the Jamaicains,an Guyanese. This young lady would have cause A scene in any country in the world. Many of you on this page used the Bajans first world status as fuel for your fire. You jackasses lack the common sense to understand what an incredible achievement that is. It seems to me most of the islands prefer to be Dum down by Jamaicans, and Guyanese, and the garbage that both exports.
February 4, 2012 at 11:30 am
Well said Nasssau, Shame on jay blessed media. I smell a smear campaign these are some of the same tricks they tried in the Bahamas. Next on the list is they favorite line the bajans dont want us in Barbados because we get ahead of them. Its strange now hearing these stories coming out of Barbados you never heard bad things about these people. The bajans work hard and built their nation to perhaps the greatest in the region Now they’re having to deal with large influx of Guy: jam: and now of all people trinidadians. The three culprits who destroyed the west indies federation are now running to the only developed black country in the world. Its A shame.—————–HYPOCRITES———————————.
February 5, 2012 at 7:53 pm
what the fuck are talking large amount of jamaicans and other caribbean people dont leave the countries to go to barbados so get the fuck off your high horse.they would much rather try to go to america canda or if push come to shove they would much rather go to cayman.and you must be smoking crack if you think barbados is the only developed black nation in the world
February 10, 2012 at 11:45 am
first…dont understand what all d fuss was about, because the young lady is clearly happy 2 b alive and was simply wearing vacation clothing…second she shoulda blastid come Trinidad…she woulda b married by now, clearly beautiful chic….shame Barbados….
February 10, 2012 at 11:49 am
i agree with you 100% Coretta…She should have come to Trinidad instead..rainbow country..until Bajans learn some damn manners!
February 11, 2012 at 1:15 am
Yo Chico, you A stupid ma….fu–.ker you’re exactly the type of idiot people dont want in they country. Last I check Canada, America, and cayman are deporting Jamaicans. February 10, 2012 at 11:51 am

February 11, 2012 at 10:21 am
Apparently you you dont know your place, Cricket sun, and fun are not available in Trinidad? The small minded thinking from so called big island people.——- please. .You guys should really stop the hate. The Bajans used three loaves of bread -n-three flying fish, and achieved first world status,an you ma–fu–ers with all your nat: wealth are still below them in every index scale in the books. who really are the fools here?…… Ames
February 11, 2012 at 6:33 pm
from all the comments i’ve have seen, i agree with only two, one being that, that lady should of never went into Bridgetown like that, yea i am Bajan, but bajan or not, i would never leave home looking the way she did, i do admire her for her confidence and that she love’s been in her own skin, and embracing the fact that she’s thick. secondly i do agree somewhat in when persons say that bajan’s are rude, i know bajan’s to talk their minds when they see something they don’t like, but to follow that lady through town was very disrespectful.
February 12, 2012 at 10:30 pm
when ur in a country up hold there rules or dont go. respect is given wen respect is shown. an it no way you can compare carnival time to a regular day. people have there children in town and if you did not know there law that speak to dress code on the streets. what people where in night clubs are ther business but when ur in public. i odnt know why we are makin this a caribbean against each other thing cause clearly it not abut her no more people jus want to say how much they hate bajans. if a bajan had gone town like that our fashion police would have put he in the paper same way it has nothing to do with nationality. it about knowing whats respectable and whats not. im fed up with this bajans think there better crap.. i went to school with bajans and it was a great experience. what u can do in ur country dont expect to do in other people country. if it was against the law else where to do it would we be makin foolish commets about this. sorry for her but i hope she gets respect an dress better after this..
February 13, 2012 at 11:49 am

February 17, 2012 at 9:12 pm
How utterly disgusting and typical Bajan behavior based on my experience. Always so high minded with themselves, anyways. Reading this makes me so bloody upset. And to imagine that this made the papers! If this is considered newsworthy, it reflects poorly of Barbados.
She is obviously a beautiful and confident women. When those bony chics walk the street they don’t get this type of attention. Why all this? Typical case of sizeism. And to all who mentioned her size and the dress, where the hell do you get off! She is obviously comfortable in her skin. Unfortunately, this incident probably messed her up and left a bad taste for Bajans and Barbados.
Way to go BIM.
February 18, 2012 at 4:33 pm
30 people followed this lady so you blamed A whole country. You should be ashamed. As A plus size lady I would never wear my dress this short. Remember now she is only 21, and at that age you look for att: an she got it. It amazes me that people who hate barbados so much are always in Bim.@clacy.
February 18, 2012 at 6:00 am
She wasn’t dressed for her size. She new it. 2wrongs don’t make a rite. They didn’t have to ” see” either
February 19, 2012 at 7:21 pm
Interesting page, two wrongs no rights. But why is this news? Maybe jaybless should point the camera on Jamaica, Trinidad ,guyana and show us the multiple rapes of young girls in jamaica by much older men infecting many with Aids. The stupid murders, and high infection rate of aids in Trinidad. Aids has reach Epidemic proportions in TnT, NO, ONE, NO ONE is doing anything. The brutal racism in Guyana still to this day the inability of governing, the failed status. These three countries are failing us as A region, and we are giving them A pass. Instead our media outlets are focusing on A big fat woman with her assets out the door in front of mothers with kids. I also support you 100% Barbados you have your head above the caribbean sea. keep up the fight against lawless wotless slackness coming to your island.
February 24, 2012 at 10:52 am
The people who are saying she should be ridiculed because of the way she is dressed, are probably the same who believe that woman who’ve been raped probably deserved it because of they way they probably dressed, or looked. Pure ignorance! She was a tourist/guest to your country, and the way most people are taught to treat guest is with hospitality! However, I am not surprised with all that Barbados has to offer one thing they do lack is Hospitality! I am an American who’ve visited most Caribbean countries and I’ve never experienced the lack of friendliness like I did in Barbados! Instead of worrying about what guest to your country decide to wear, work on enhancing your Tourist Board and giving etiquette classes to your citizens! And yes Barbados needs me and any other tourist because lack of tourist means lack of revue to the country!
February 27, 2012 at 4:15 pm
It’s amazing how so many people can pass so many different comments about a person lack of good dress sense, age nor size nor colour nor nationality nor any thing else should be an excuse for lack of DECORUM.
March 4, 2012 at 4:49 pm
while she is a beautiful girl, and what she choose to wear is her damn business, swe got away from the fact that she is 300 hundred pounds and that is unhealthy for her, honey you just need to lose a few pounds for your health, and maybe what she had to face would motive her on this journey
March 7, 2012 at 8:22 pm
This is undoubtly horrifying. The way this young lady was heckled by these locals was totally uncalled for. It is true she exposed a lot of body, and lets be honest if you dress like that at that size then you are obviously going to get stared at. But it’s nobody’s damn business to go up to her and tap her the way “blondie” did. Firstly, thats invasion of private space and disrespect and secondly, I would’ve punched her in the friggin face.If they found her attire and appearance funny then they shoud’ve laughed it off among themselves and went about their merry way. No one deserves that kind of embarrassment, shame on the part of these women. But I don’t blame and judge the nation of Barbados for the actions of a handful of idle punks.
March 8, 2012 at 9:13 am
I can’t believe what am seeing and reading. What a big shame for BARBADOS. What was the reason for all the crowd around the girl? Is that the worst they have ever seen? Its really sad. We are so small minded….or must i say bajans are small minded. BULLYING to the MAX!!!!
March 10, 2012 at 7:37 pm
I have an issue with the title. Why does the word “fat” need to be included? The title totally contradicts the entire article.
March 11, 2012 at 10:58 am
Ms. Walters says she’s become used to this reaction from traveling to other places so there must be a few more evil people in the world. Not just Bajans.
March 13, 2012 at 6:47 pm
They’re just mad because most of them crowding her were on the big side themselves and she’s prettier than they are. She should have turned around and followed them for being ugly……both inside and out!
March 19, 2012 at 9:24 am
The behaviour of the people in Barbados following and ridiculing that girl is a product of ignorance and insecurity. No one is ever in a position to stalk and degrade someone on account that their prey doesn’t meet a specific standard of theirs. It is one thing to hear about such an event happening with a few people involved, but a whole throng of people verbally brutalling an individual on a whim. Really? I’m not about to attribute this kind of behaviour to all of Barbados, but as an island that has a large tourist industry, this sort of thing on social media can certainly have an impact. I only hope that the people involved realize the errors of their ways and they to learn from it. Also, it’s time for all of us caribbean people to stop the nonsense when it comes to bashing other islands. The second something negative is posted about some people on one island, the whole island is demonized, and this is followed by people declaring that one island is better than the next blah, blah, blah, blah. Why always so negative? Damn. At the end of the day, you’re just creating a negative aura around yourself that permeates all aspects of your life. Let’s get it together people; a healthier, happier life awaits.

March 20, 2012 at 7:25 pm
Bajans are so disgusting and illiterate…matters not what she was wearing or what was her size..have none of you all better to do?
This would never happen in Trinidad because there are worse cases and we handle ourselves with composure we would never behave so backward and stupid. Look at the size of the crowd. Barbados you have embarrassed the Caribbean. How small minded can a nation be?
God would not be pleased if he came to see this disgusting crowd
March 24, 2012 at 9:56 pm
[Bajan hate galore] You go to Barbados, and the bajans look so clean an healthy the country smell clean the streets are clean ever fuc-in thing working efficient. Give us A fuc in break with all this hate Barbados sh: When one research the caribbean why is Barbados always in the top position. Why are these same black bajans perhaps the purest black people outside of Africa rank so high in human development. The white bajans an black bajans also seem to have an understanding of each other unlike any other carib: island. Both black\ white sound axactly alike. Vincy,Domi:really. 50 years have passed and Jamaicans, and Trinidadians are still telling us to hate Barbados.
March 27, 2012 at 3:12 pm
it a pity,as caribbean nation vistin Barbados,
i love barbados it a very clean and tidy place, but a few of the people here tread outsider real bad, when u get to the airport the put u a cold cold room, even children, and if the r no flight u have to stay there hungry till a flight is avalable.and the officer r very harsh on u,most people dont know the treatment that u get there,so will not agree with u if u say that u were finger search here, but it does happen
April 4, 2012 at 1:19 pm
I’m so ashamed of my fellow caribbean people. No wonder the why the first world countries see us the way they do. As for these Bajans,(ones depicted in photos) you disgust me, after all she is much more beautiful than all you Bajans females in the photos. Not that I am happy with the length of the dress she wore, but it was a lovely dress compare to what everyone had on that was following her, and it was her choice and should be respected for it. I have seen some huuuuuuuge Bajans and in some undesireable dress i may had, and no one treats them like that. I have alot of Bajan freinds and I dont know of anyone of them that display such behavier. Simple because they are the intelligent ones and I am sure there are others too. The authorities should really comment on this situation. Lets hope this does not put a wift into long relationship with the two nations concern. Skenina, as for you, keep your head up. You are beautiful, just learn from this experience.
April 4, 2012 at 11:25 pm
The funniest quote on this page A blogger wrote bajans used three loaves of bread, 3 flying fish and achieved first world. Thats some funny shaaaa! but true. Here in St maarten Jamaicans are very criminal minded. But they’re the dummest criminals in the world. Barbados is A country of laws an lawyers. Jamaicans are to dum to to understand that.
April 9, 2012 at 11:29 pm
What I see here are bajans doing the job that jamaicans should have done 50 yrs: ago. schooling this young lady. The answers and solutions to jamaica’s problems are right in barbados. We cannot continue to blame Barbados for our problems. Our schools, teachers, church’s,doctors and government failed us. We have lost two generations of young Jamaicans. We have young men boosting about having 14 and 15 pickney, young girls with 4 and 5 pickney before the age of thirty. Our young and old men,and women are bleaching and are walking around with gloves hats, and musks in 90 degree heat. After 50 yrs: we have gold medals, and Barbados free healthcare for all bajans.
