This week my facebook timeline was in a frenzy over the alleged cost of Anya Ayoung Chee‘s “The Runway” section for Tribe’s 2012 “Take Me To“ band.
I saw Anya fans GO IN!
I saw the die-hard fans, the #PR9Anya fans no longer Anya fans, I even saw people revert to saying some nasty things because the talk is that the cost of Anya’s section is unbelievable…in the 5-9 thousand dollar US range!!!!
Yes man….US DOLLARS!
Anyhoo, allyuh know I does go to de source, and that is exactly what I did.
I reached out to Anya and she cleared up some things!
When asked whether the cost of The Runway‘s backline is almost $5K US, Anya was utterly shocked and curious to know how those prices ever arose.
The Project Runway season 9 winner cleared up right away that the quotes floating around the internet were totally incorrect.
The backline is actually $4995 TT and not US.
Ayoung-Chee also stated that there is really isn’t a backline or frontline but that the add-ons are what will be the difference in cost.
There are big and small headpieces, big and small leg pieces and capes as add-ons. Multiple options for a diverse carnival costume.
The designer stated that the Tribe costume was as affordable as any other costume on the market but that her costume was “made to be like shopping for a fashion item rather than a costume” with some items ready for wear after the carnival season.
Anya was adamant in saying, “Any rumours of such exorbitant prices are rumours.”
“I have no interest in mas being any more unaffordable than it already is!”
And in regards to the individual costumes, there will only be 10 custom made costumes….I am guessing that they will only be worn by a either beauty queen….or a big shot’s wife!
Call the Tribe mas camp for all the details and let’s stop spreading rumors people!
So who will be playing in “The Runway” section?

Who will be playing??? More like who can get in the band?!?! steruuups I hate when people act like there is not a hierarchy with some mas bands, granted I am not hating on the “who you know” style of Tribe per say but it does exist!!

Anya’s approach to her band will encourage people to be creative and create custom combinations rather that stratifying into who is in front and behind. I am glad to hear that the prices are within market range. Rumors can spark over the smallest things. I hope that people put just as much energy into pushing carnival forward worldwide because that takes work, not talk.
