Some of the world’s best chefs are from the Caribbean but don’t forget our bakers!
Twin brother and sister team, Tim and Winnette McIntosh, are the newest addition to the Caribbean celebrity food makers. Last Sunday, the two celebrated their win of the very popular Food Network show, “Cupcake Wars.”
The siblings, who were the only contestants to use all five required ingredients in their cake for the show took victory in the finale with their creation of a fresh ginger 5-spice cupcake with red-bean filling, topped with lychee butter-cream frosting and a ginger caramel drizzle….mouth watering!
Both McIntoshes hold engineering degress from MIT and have used their science smarts to make delicious cupcakes, macarons (spelled the French way), madeleines and shortbread at their Capitol Hill shop.
“We understand the fundamentals behind baking, baking as a science is not new to us, so I think we sort of leveraged that technical background and creativity,” McIntosh Ambrose said of their “Cupcake Wars” win.
In a recent interview Tim said, “It’s an amazing feeling to have won because since we opened our store, we’ve had so many people tell us that we make the best cupcakes in DC and now it’s validated and almost like we have the best cakes in the entire USA.”
Their delicious cupcakes even had Cupcake Wars judge Candace Nelsen remarking, “I was in heaven eating this plate”.
With their unique perspective on food and flavor due to their Trinidadian heritage and science background, the McIntosh twins were able to set themselves apart with incorporating all the complex elements to make their delicious creations.
Tim and Winette won US$10,000 and their winning cakes will be featured at the Chinese New Year Festival in Los Angeles, California.
