Dubbed the Superbowl of Historical Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Queens, the EBONY Magazine Campus Queen Competition is bigger than the Campus Beauty Competition itself.
EBONY Magazine has an annual feature in their September issue of the HBCU Queens. Ten queens are given the opportunity to grace the pages of the magazine. But there is a catch; the general public is responsible for choosing these ten queens. Family, friends and classmates are urged to vote online for their favorite girl.
This year the competition features three queens from the Caribbean. In order for our Caribbean Queens to grace the pages of one of the leading Black Magazines in the world we need to VOTE for our girls.
Voting began at midnight on May 8 and ends at 11:59 PM on May 31.
Meet our Caribbean Queens:
Twenty two year old Rolanda Sue, a senior at Johnson C. Smith University is from Georgetown, Guyana. Rolanda majors in Biology and Chemistry. She plans on teaching science. In her quest to further her education she intends to attend graduate school to obtain a masters and PhD in the sciences. She said “I believe that good educators are essential for students to excel.” Rolanda enjoys spending time with my family, nature walks, road trips, mini adventures, and playing sports.
Most memorable contribution as a Campus Queen:
One goal of mine was to change the self-images of individuals and groups on campus. To do so I held programs that focused on self-worth, professionalism, etiquette, networking, and image as a whole. It was rewarding to see the growth of students over the course of the year. There was this one young lady that whispered to me, “You give me HOPE.” I will never forget that moment.
Tezel Anya Lightbourne is a twenty one year old Nassau, Bahamas. She’s a senior at Philander Smith College majoring in Biology (Pre Medical Training). Tezel aspires to become a healthcare provider in Public Health and/or Medicine (either Family Medicine or Pediatrics). When she’s not in school she enjoys singing, dancing, drawing/sketching, reading, learning new things, spending time with friends and family.
Most memorable contribution as a Campus Queen
I believe that my most memorable contribution as Miss Philander Smith College was gearing my platform, entitled “Pride: It’s a SERIOUS Matter!”, towards encouraging fellow Philanderians to have pride and enthusiasm not only in our institution, but also ourselves and our communities.
From St. Croix, Virgin Islands is Ivory Carter. Twenty one year old Ivory is a junior at the University of the Virgin Islands majoring in Criminal Justice. After graduating she plans to apply to the Virgin lslands Police Department for the position of a Crime Scene Investigator. Ivory enjoys traveling, engaging in intellectual community oriented discussions with friends, and spending time with my family.
Most memorable contribution as a Campus Queen
After being crowned on March 31st 2011, I was invited to participate in the 50th annual Carnival celebration on the island of St. Thomas.
Let’s support our Caribbean Queens by voting for them online at EBONY.
