The Guyana Model Search and Designers’ Portfolio Competitions 2012 culminated with a bang last Sunday, July 1, at Isika, Parika, Guyana. Guyanese talent fueled by a passion for fashion and a dash of Caribbean flavour were all the ingredients needed for its successful completion.
Nine designers and 21 models were a part of the final competition. At the end of the evening they were only four winners.
Winning the Designers’ Portfolio Competition was Andrew Cummings, a young designer whose collection for the evening was inspired by the scales of the Hassa (fish).
There were three winners in the Model Search competition – shining in the plus size competition was Natalia Thomas; coming out victorious in the male competition was Tyrone Hamid and snatching the title in the female competition was Carles Griffith. The winners were chosen after a series of competitive rounds and challenging eliminations.
American actress, Anna Marie Horsford; the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Steven Cutting; Vice President of Elite Model Management, Jean Pierre Begon and Caribbean Export Development Agency’s Manager, Competitiveness and Innovation, Christopher McNair were all in Guyana to serve as judges for the finals of these competitions. As a treat to the Model Search Competition and Guyana, Jean Pierre Begon had his keen eyes out to choose one of the models to join Elite Model Management.
In addition to designs from the competing designers, patrons were also treated to a superb parade of exhilarating, tasteful and daring designs from visiting Caribbean designers – from Jamaica, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua and St. Vincent – including the feisty Keshon Hawthorne, a contestant in the recently concluded Mission Catwalk.
Sonia Noel, the brainchild behind the Guyana Model Search and Designers’ Portfolio competitions uses these competitions as an avenue to propel and showcase the works of young and emerging designers and models.
