Congratulations to Jamaican swimmer Alia Atkinson, who despite not earning a medal in the 100-meter breaststroke Monday, her fourth-place finish was the highest individual finish by a Jamaican in the Olympics.
“I wanted to get that medal to show that Jamaican swimming is up there,” stated the 23-year-old.
Atkinson’s time was 1 minute, 6.93 seconds. Satomi Suzuki of Japan won in 1:05.46. Rebecca Soni of the United States was second (1:05.55) and Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania was third (1:05.47).
Atkinson previously competed in the 2004 Olympics, 2008 Olympics and plans to compete again in the 2016 Olympics.
Congrats Alia!
