In case you missed it…

The screams and cheers were almost deafening when Red Plastic Bag (RPB) was recently announced winner of the 2012 Pic-O-De-Crop in St Michael, Barbados.

It is the 51-year-old’s 10th title in the competition since making his debut 30 years ago.

Before churning out the lyrics to his song, Thank You Calypso, RPB (whose real name is Stedson Wiltshire) took the audience down memory lane by showing footage of his three decades performing in Barbados’ annual Crop Over.

The second half of the show saw him deliver an amusing rendition of Royal Visit in which he encourages Queen Elizabeth II to visit Barbados and experience the country’s negative and positive attributes.

Besides winning a cash prize of $10,500 (Barbadian), RPB also received a KIA Cerato Sedan, a Samsung Tablet courtesy of LIME and $1,000 worth of clothing compliments of Henrietta’s Closet.

Runner-up Ian Webster’s songs were De Hollywood Tree and Sweetness. He was awarded $20,000. Third-placed Anthony ‘Gabby’ Carter received $15,000. His songs were CBC Pruhnography and Popsicle I Come Fuh You.

Filling fourth and fifth spots, respectively, were Adrian Clarke with I Ain’t Frighten and dethroned king Popsicle (David Hall) with Bail Out and My Phone.

The other finalists and their entries were Ronald Clarke (De Announcer), Anderson Harper (Blood), William Burke (Smokey Burke), Troy Harper (Troy Special), Peter Alleyne (Adonijah) and the sole female Chrystal Cummins-Beckles who performed Why Ya Tek Me Fa Sandra Doh and Fly on De Wall.

Heavy rain did not prevent patrons from turning out in their hundreds at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sporting Complex Gymnasium, which became the new venue due to the inclement weather.

The finals were originally slated for the Kensington Oval.
