According to Times of India, the on-going World Twenty20 saw its first off-field controversy on Wednesday, as three British ‘female guests’ who were partying in West Indies’ star batsman Chris Gayle’s room, were arrested by the Sri Lankan police early in the morning.
The West Indian team is staying at the luxury Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo. Gayle was reportedly letting his hair down with teammates Andre Russell, Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Smith, when the policemen ‘busted’ the party.
Sources said the police were called after the West Indian players declined to sign in the women as guests after a night out. The West Indies team management later apologised for the incident.
The Windies are scheduled to play Australia in the first semifinal of the WorldT20, at the Premadasa on Friday. The West Indians had beaten New Zealand in the ‘Super Over’ on Monday to reach the semis. Gayle & Co had partied hard after that win too.
The Jamaican had posted pictures of the party on his twitter account then. On the field too, Gayle has been in a mood to groove. He has been trying out ‘Gangnam style’ moves, the dance sensation made famous by South Korean pop star Psy, whenever he takes a wicket.
Check out the photos Gayle posted on his twitter account below:
“At least three girls of British nationality have been arrested for unauthorized entry by the ministerial security division when they entered the hotel floor of the rooms of the West Indian cricketers,” a statement from the Sri Lankan police spokesman said in the evening.
The women were not charged, and were later released on bail. A hotel source later told an agency that the police had overreacted.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the incident but declined to comment. The ICC’s anti-corruption wing (ACSU) is likely to look into the incident.
A few days back, a Sri Lankan man was arrested after he had entered the Australian cricketers’ room and offered sex. He was arrested on trespassing charges.
